BBC Breakfast’s Ben Thompson left red-faced in awkward technical blunder on air

BBC Breakfast presenter Ben Thompson was left utterly red-faced after the news program suffered a major technical blunder live on air.

During Sunday’s (December 3) visit to the BBC studios, the 42-year-old broadcaster welcomed viewers back to the show with his co-host Sarah Campbell. The pair discussed some of the biggest stories hitting the headlines this morning.

This included the rise in aggression towards retail and waiting staff as well as the sudden downpour of snow across the country. Towards the end of the sow, the pair discussed the impact the freezing temperatures will have on the NHS.

The newsreader attempted to share a VT from Adam Brookes hospital in Cambridge where medical staff are already feeling the pinch. But things didn’t quite go to plan when BBC bosses cut to the clip which played for a few minutes without any sound.

It was clear to see behind the scenes that producers were scrambling to pull the clip off the airwaves and return to the studio. Luckily, their next interviewee Rory Dean immediately rushed onto set and joined them on the famous red sofa for his in-depth interview.

Ben awkwardly chuckled: “So you might have noticed that there was no sound on that. So just while we organise things here, we played you a bit of silent telly. We’ll fix that and play it for you a little later.

“But I'm delighted to say that Rory has hot footed it in here, Rory Dean is from the NHS confederation and presents NHS organisations.” The star went on to share the added pressure winter weather adds to hospitals up and down the country.

It comes after Sarah surprised viewers when she stepped in for Naga Munchetty on the morning show on Saturday (December 2). The raven-haired beauty, 48, usually hosts the news program with her co-host Charlie Stayt from Thursday to Saturday.

But at the start of the weekend, the blonde broadcaster, 50, stood in for her and presented the show in her place. Although it’s not known why Naga was missing from the show, the newsreader was spotted dancing the night away at an evening in London on Friday night (December 1).

The radio host looked nothing short of sensational as she ditched her usually conservative BBC Breakfast host and opted for a classic black dress. Naga was all smiles as she attended An Audience with Kylie where she watched the pop sensation, 55, perform at the Royal Albert Hall.

The stellar gig is set to hit the airwaves on ITV later this year. The broadcaster was part of an exclusive VIP audience who watched the hitmaker perform her greatest hits as well as songs from her eagerly anticipated album Tension.

Also in attendance was This Morning presenter Rylan Clark who wouldn’t wait to share the gig online. Taking to Instagram, the hunk shared a clip of him running onto stage to sweep up the shower of confetti all over the stage before the blonde beauty performed her next song.

BBC Breakfast airs everyday on BBC One from 6am or catch up on BBC iPlayer.
