BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent corrects co-star live on air after Strictly blunder

BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent was forced to correct her co-star Jon Kay live on air after he accidentally called Strictly Come Dancing contestant Les Dennis the wrong name.

The comedian, 69, became the first person to be axed from the 2023 series of the BBC dancing competition on Sunday (October 1) after he and his partner Nancy Xu went up against Nikita Kanda and Gorka Marquez in the dreaded dance off.

During Monday's (October 2) edition of the morning show, Sally and Jon discussed Les' exit but the latter instead called him "Len Dennis" after getting mixed up with their guest Lenny Henry.

Before showing a clip of Les and his dance partner Nancy XU on the ballroom floor, Jon said: "If you haven't watched last night's Strictly Come Dancing yet. here's a spoiler. We're going to tell you who was kicked out. So just close your ears and eyes for a couple of seconds."

"It was Les Dennis," Sally chimed in. "The first to be voted out of this year's competition. This was his Samba with his partner Nancy Xu. It failed to get him through the first round of eliminations…I honestly thought he would be in it for a while."

"But the standard is so high, isn't it?" Jon noted. "Some of them are too good. They're gonna be like the professionals by week five. Some of them are already," Sally beamed. "At least Len can have his Saturday night's at home now," Jon said before Sally called out his mistake.

"Les," Sally corrected as Jon laughed: "Yes, I have got Lenny in my ear." Brushing off the error, Sally went on: "I still think Les will go and watch and take part in the group dances."

When asked by host Tess Daly about their time on the show, Les said: "I’ve had the best time, this lady has been amazing, a great teacher, she’s really put me through my paces."

Turning to Nancy, Les added: " I did as well as I could for you, I hope! That lot up there, I’m going to miss you so much. I really appreciate and understand the judge’s point of view, thank you so much (To Shirley) for giving me a 10 for entertainment.

"I hope I’ve entertained, that’s what I came here for. Strictly is the best and the people who put this on, you’re just all amazing!"
