BBC issues warning to viewers ahead of major change to channels tomorrow | The Sun

THE BBC has issued a warning to viewers ahead of a major change to channels tomorrow.

Terrestrial TV viewers currently have to change over to BBC One to see their local news, as BBC One HD has not been equipped to broadcast it.

However, that will change for some regional programming from tomorrow for anyone watching on Freeview or YouView in England.

London, East Midlands, West Midlands, Yorkshire, East Yorkshire & Lincolnshire and the Channel Islands are the first regions to receive this update.

The remaining regions will then receive their regional programming on BBC One HD on Channel 101 on April 26.

These are: North East & Cumbria, North West, West, South West, South (including Oxford), East (including Cambridge) and the South East.

Tomorrow's changes for the first six regions will happen automatically, but some viewers may be prompted to retune their box.

The regional programming that will be shown on BBC One HD include local news broadcasts during BBC Breakfast and at 1.30pm, 6.30pm and 10.30pm on weekdays.

However, those watching BBC One HD on BBC iPlayer will not be able to see the regional programming and will still get the 'red slate'.

In November last year, the BBC first announced the change before it started moving regional programming to BBC One HD on satellite platforms in January.

It meant the likes of Sky and Freesat then deleted the standard definition (SD) version of the channel from their respective TV guides.

The BBC said in a statement at the time: "This is not a decision that's been taken lightly – indeed, it's been one of the key reasons why we've held back so long in our HD rollout plans."

It meant BBC One HD switched from channel 106 to 101 on satellite platforms, replacing BBC One SD.

By March 2024, all standard definition BBC channels will have been retired for satellite users.

This means users with out-of-date boxes will have to upgrade to continue watching.

There is a dedicated website to support people with SD-only satellite boxes to move to a high-definition (HD) device which was launched by the BBC and Freesat.

Meanwhile Sky has a list of affected SD-only set-top boxes on its website, including '4F2001 to 4F2006 (Amstrad)' and '0F01 to 0F05 (Panasonic)'
