Strictly: Layton dedicated latest performance to his mum
Strictly Come Dancing’s Layton Williams defended his Couple’s Choice dance from last week, explaining there were “more layers” than “swinging around a pole”.
Some fans of the BBC competition criticised the routine on Saturday night by Layton and dance partner Nikita Kuzmin, although others applauded it.
Appearing on spin-off show It Takes Two, host Fleur East reminded audiences how the routine was dedicated to Layton’s mother, who was in the audience watching.
“This performance was for one person in particular – your mum,” she commented.
“What was it like dedicating it to her with her in the audience? Look at her!”

“I know,” the actor replied. “It sounds so funny to dedicate dance where we’re literally swinging around on poles to my mum…”
As Fleur laughed, he added: “Do you know what I mean? But it has more layers to it…
“The fact that she can be there cheering me on no matter what I do is kind of a beautiful thing.
“I wouldn’t be the person I am, swinging around that pole if it wasn’t for her, do you know what I mean?”

Still chuckling, Fleur repeated: “If it wasn’t for your mum, you wouldn’t be swinging around on a pole…”
“Absolutely,” Layton responded, continuing: “Like all jokes aside, she is amazing and has made so many sacrifices for me to kind of be who I am, where I am…
“So this journey, she feels like she’s been going on it with me, so it’s so nice to finally have her back and make her proud.”
It comes as some viewers complained about the routine.
Taking to social media, one wrote: “Nobody is watching #Strictly in Blackpool to see pole dancing. I hate the Couple’s Choice concept.”
@katylou0210 added: “That weird pole dancing, strip show horror does not deserve a place on the Blackpool ballroom floor #Strictly.”
Others defended the performance though, with @spiritualstiles adding: “To the people saying that was inappropriate, pole dancing in a form of dancing, it is an art form. It doesn’t need to have sexual connotations just stfu #Strictly.” (sic)
