Cain’s words help Moira to decide to help Faith die in Emmerdale

Moira (Natalie J. Robb) faced an agonising decision in tonight’s Emmerdale, after her mother-in-law Faith (Sally Dexter), who only has weeks to live, asked her to be with her when she ends her own life before her illness makes it impossible for her to have any control.

When Faith first discovered that her cancer had returned, Moira found out and Faith persuaded her to keep the news a secret from Cain (Jeff Hordley).

This was incredibly difficult for Moira and she knows that what Faith is asking her to do now will have an even more profound effect on Cain, the man she referred to in this episode as her ‘soul mate.’

Her strong instinct was to refuse to do as Faith asked, but Faith said if she told Cain and Chas (Lucy Pargeter) what Faith was planning she would simply go to ground and find a way to die alone.

Caught in an impossible position, Moira needed advice and she got it from Cain – without telling him exactly what they were talking about.

She talked to him about how her brother Mackenzie (Lawrence Robb) had prevented her from seeing her own mother as she was dying – by telling Moira that she was already dead. She said in some ways this had been a blessing as her memories of her mother were of her when she was healthy.

She asked Cain if he would want his children to watch him die and he said that he wouldn’t.

This was enough to make up Moira’s mind and she told Faith, ‘I won’t help you do it, but of course I’ll be there. I love you, Faith, and I want to be by your side.’

The two women hugged and sobbed together, pledging it would be their secret, ‘Until the end.’

Emmerdale are working with the charity Dignity In Dying on this storyline. ‘Faith’s storyline not only shines a light on the issues at the heart of the assisted dying debate, but as new polling reveals, it reflects the conversations people are already having up and down the country,’ Molly Pike, Media and Campaigns Officer for the charity, has said.
