Bros star Matt, 53, took to the famous dancefloor on Saturday night for Strictly Come Dancing’s first live show of the series. He performed a Quickstep but received some negative feedback from the judges, which has been deemed “harsh” by viewers, who slammed the panel for not being as critical of the other contestants. Appearing on BBC spin-off show It Takes Two on Monday, Matt and Nadiya addressed the backlash, and the professional dancer agreed the feedback had been “harsh”.

Host Rylan Clark acknowledged the judge’s criticism of Matt’s first live dance.

“Let’s talk about the judges because a lot of people are saying there were some quite harsh comments there.

“I’m just going to throw it over to you, what did you make of it?”

“Why are you throwing it over to us?” Matt joked, clearly wanting to avoid commenting on the panel’s take on his dance.

“Because I’m that type of person!” Rylan laughed. “But even Craig (Revel Horwood) thought the other ones were being a bit harsh, and when Craig says that… I mean, something’s definitely going on!

“Nadiya, let me come to you, what did you make of it?”

“Well, I’m not the judge but I’m a professional dancer and I think they were a bit harsh, to be honest,” she replied diplomatically.

“Because it was week one, Matt did all the steps right and it was quite a full-on routine, there was a lot of content and the Quickstep is a very difficult dance.

“And musicality was just on point, obviously, he’s a musician.

“But to do all the steps correctly in 10 days of just rehearsing something new… I wouldn’t be able to just go on stage and perform like he does, no way!

“And he did it in front of the millions, so…” Rylan went on to ask the singer how the remarks had impacted him.

“It knocked your confidence a bit, didn’t it Matt?” the presenter probed.

“Yeah,” Matt agreed. “I think it was… everyone seemed to get constructive criticism.

“And then [for them] to say, ‘Well, I don’t know quite what it was, but…’ I’m like, ‘Well, I want know what it was!’

“But I did find great comfort in Craig – I never thought I’d say that in week one!

“But he did say that he liked the routine but he mentioned my frame, but he did then go on to say that I will learn about my frame, which is the whole point.

“And then also Motsi (Mabuse) she’s dead right, I was into the dance but she wanted to feel me more – that’s what I needed, that critique that I could actually go back and use.”

“But you’ve got that now, that dance is now behind us!” Rylan reassured the couple, who celebrated.

It comes as viewers were left disgruntled by Matt’s feedback and claimed the judges were “unfair” to the musician.

“Pantomime villain judge” Craig even stepped in on Saturday night to quash his colleague’s comments.

In response to his fellow judges’ views on Matt’s routine, Craig stated: “They’re all being really nasty.”

He went on to add: “That was punchy. It was a really great routine.”

Strictly – It Takes Two continues on Tuesday at 6.30pm on BBC Two.
