Carol Vorderman AXED from BBC radio show after bitter row over social media posts | The Sun

CAROL Vorderman has dramatically quit her BBC radio show over the broadcaster's new social media rules.

The former Countdown host, 62, has announced she is leaving her BBC Radio Wales programme.

Carol presented the two hour and 30 minute show each Saturday morning.

She landed the gig – which was her first ever radio programme – back in 2019 after previously guest hosting the slot.

The star has named the Beeb's new social media guidelines for presenters as her reason for coming off air.

Carol also admitted breaching the rules and said bosses told her she "must leave".

In a statement, Vorders said: "After five years, I'm leaving my Saturday morning show on BBC Radio Wales.

"The BBC recently introduced new social media guidelines which I respect.

"However, despite my show being lighthearted with no political content, it was explained to me that as it is a weekly show in my name, the new guidelines would apply to all and any content that I post all year round.

"Since those non-negotiable changes to my radio contract were made, l've ultimately found that l'm not prepared to lose my voice on social media, change who I am, or lose the ability to express the strong beliefs I hold about the political turmoil this country finds itself in.

"My decision has been to continue to criticise the current UK government for what it has done to the country which I love – and I'm not prepared to stop. I was brought up to fight for what I believe in, and I will carry on.

"Consequently I have now breached the new guidelines and BBC Wales management have decided I must leave. We each must make our decisions.

"I'm sad to have to leave the wonderful friends l've made at Radio Wales. I wish them, and all of our listeners, all the love in the world.

"We laughed a lot, and we will miss each other dearly. But for now, another interesting chapter begins."

A spokesperson for the BBC said: "Carol has been a presenter on BBC Radio Wales since 2018.

"We’d like to thank her for her work and contribution to the station over the past five years."

The new rules were published by the broadcaster following a row about Match of the Day host Gary Lineker’s political posts on social media.

At the time of his suspension, the BBC claimed that Lineker could not return to sceeens “until we’ve got an agreed and clear position on his use of social media.”

However, the broadcaster later backed down after a huge outcry from fans.

Lineker's Match of the Day co-star Alan Shearer said of the fallout: “It was a really difficult situation for everyone concerned. And through no fault of their own, some really great people in TV and in radio were put in an impossible situation. And that wasn’t fair.

"So it’s good to get back to some sort of normality and be talking about football again.”

The new BBC rules apply to presenters who have “a particular responsibility to respect the corporation’s impartiality, because of their profile on the BBC”.

They states that while a programme is on air, and for two weeks before and after the series, the hosts must not endorse or attack a political party, criticise the character of politicians, or comment on any issue of political debate during an election period.

Carol is known for her anti-government commentary on her social media channels.

She was recently forced to retract cronyism claims against Tory chairman Greg Hands.
