Dan Walker hopes Helen Skelton ‘isn’t getting any flak’ after quitting role

Helen Skelton signs off BBC Radio 5 Live for the final time

Dan Walker branded his pal Helen Skelton a “great mum” as he discussed her decision to quit her show at BBC Radio 5 Live.

The former BBC Breakfast told Matt Allwright during Tuesday’s Jeremy Vine Show that he hopes Helen isn’t getting “any flak” for wanting to spend more time with her children.

Dan said: “She is a great Mum. She is an incredibly dedicated Mum to her three children and she would say if she were here this morning – she’s not, she is with her kids this morning!- she would say that parents are making compromises all the time.

“Of her three children, two of them play football on a Sunday morning and she’s made the decision practically she would much rather watch them play football and encourage them to do that than be on the radio at that time.

“And I think that is a decision that parents are making all the time.”

He added: “And anyone who ever spends any time with Helen or watches her on her programmes, all she does is speak about her kids.

“She’s a brilliant Mum and when we were filming the show, we made sure that we did it around both of our families as well – as parents have to do all the time.

“I hope she is not getting any flak for it ‘coz she is lovely to spend time with, lovely to work with.”

On Sunday, Helen confirmed her BBC Radio 5 Live show would be her last.

The Countryfile presenter appeared to get emotional as she bid farewell to her co-stars and loyal listeners.

She said: “That is it for today. That’s it from me on Sundays for now.

“Thank you for your company over the last year, I’ve loved every minute of our time together.

“On this show next Sunday, there’s live coverage of the Women’s World Cup Final on Five Live, come on England, hopefully.”

The mum-of-three went on: “But now it is time to hand over to Steve Crossman.

“This has been a TBI media production for 5 Live and BBC sounds, thank you to all of the team. Thank you to all of you, maybe we will meet again soon. It’s hard to know what to say without getting emotional Steve.”

“Honestly, it’s been so wonderful working with you,” Steve told Helen.

“I know you’re going to be absolutely, massively missed and I’ve loved our handovers and our chats in the middle of the show and stuff.”

He added: “It’s been absolutely awesome. So thank you so much.”
