It’s not long before fans of Doctor Who will get to see the highly anticipated centenary special this Autumn. With Jodie Whittaker’s portrayal of the Time Lord coming to an end as the Doctor is set to regenerate in the special, the actress detailed her final scene.

Jodie joined the cast of the long-running sci-fi show back in 2017 as she made history by becoming the first female doctor to play the role.

Replacing Peter Capaldi, the 40-year-old has been the main feature in the show for three series with the upcoming century special drawing her time to an end.

The Doctor is set to regenerate within the episode as Jodie will pass the baton onto Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa who will be taking over the role.

As the 13th Time Lord’s five-year reign draws to a close, the actress has teased that her final episode is one for the “Whovians”.

In the special, it’s been revealed the Doctor will face not one but three of her enemies known in the show, the Daleks, Cybermen and the Master.

To help defeat her nemesis, fans will see some old faces returning in the episode including Ace (played by Sophie Aldred), Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh)

Speaking about the final scene, which was filmed in one long take, Jodie paid tribute to Chris Shedding on how he handled her bowing out.

She told Empire: “I love the dialogue Chris wrote for my regeneration. It captures my Doctor beautifully. It’s simple, epic, and beautiful.”

Jodie shared it wasn’t until she’d shot the last scene that she got emotional on set.

The actress added: “When I could see the crew was happy with that last shot, that’s when my bottom lip started going.

“I was like, “Well, they can’t say they need another take now because I’ve f*cking lost it!”’

Within the 90-minute-long special, eagle-eyed fans will also be able to see Jodie pay homage to all the other doctors that came before her

Fans can expect to see the fourth Time Lord’s (Tim Baker) striped scarf along with Jodie wearing a question mark jumper to match the one worn by Sylvester McCoy as the seventh doctor.

Other nods will include the checked trousers worn by Patrick Troughton in 1963 and the fifth doctor’s odd celery sprig.

David Tennant’s brown and blue tie can also be spotted along with the actor himself who will be returning to reprise his role as the 10th Doctor alongside Catherine Tate as Donna Noble.

One source told The Mirror: “Getting Jodie and some others to wear some of the best-loved items from the Doctors’ wardrobes over the decades, seems a fitting and perfect way to mark the BBC’s 100-year anniversary.”

Along with Jodie exiting the show is producer Chris Chibnall who will be being replaced by showrunner Russell T Davies.

Although this won’t be his first time working on the BBC show as Russell was part of the team over a decade ago between 2005 to 2010.

Despite saying he wouldn’t ever return back to Doctor Who, he confessed to Radio Times that wasn’t true.

He said: “The truth of it is, everyone lies when they leave Doctor Who and says ‘Oh, I’ve moved on! I’ve been thinking about it since I was three, so there’s no way you stop thinking about it.”

Doctor Who’s next special premieres in October 2022 on BBC One.
