Dot Cotton (played by June Brown) passed away peacefully at her home with grandson Charlie Cotton (Declan Bennett) in Ireland, leaving the whole of Walford in mourning. Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) has been particularly grief-stricken with the loss of her beloved grandmother but is trying to organise the best possible funeral in her memory. Little did she know that she was going to meet another member of Dot’s extensive family at the cermeony who she didn’t expect.

Are Sonia Fowler and Reiss related in EastEnders?

Outside the Queen Vic where everyone else is gathered sharing memories of Dot, Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) is anxiously standing outside.

It isn’t until Sonia walks out of the pub that he explains he was too nervous to go in there.

When the pair get to talking, Reiss reveals that his grandfather was the brother of Dot’s dad, Bob Colwell, making him a great-nephew of the Walford stalwart.

Despite their familial connection, Sonia and Reiss are not actually related.

Sonia may call Dot her grandmother but she wasn’t related to her by blood.

She is Dot’s step-granddaughter as Sonia was the granddaughter of her second husband Jim Branning (John Bardon).

He was also the father of Jack (Scott Maslen) and Max Branning (Jake Wood) which makes them Sonia’s step-uncles.

Therefore, while Sonia is closest to Dot on the square, it is actually Reiss who is related by blood.

When discussing the characters’ connection at the EastEnders Q&A, Cassidy joked: “So we’re not related, that’s what people keep saying!”

This means that the only other blood relative of Dot’s is Dotty Cotton (Milly Zero).

She is the daughter of nasty Nick Cotton (John Altman) who died of respiratory failure from a heroin overdose in February 2015.

Actor Freeman then went on to explain his experience when he showed up at Elstree Studios on his first day.

“My very first scene, I found myself on Albert Square, standing over a car, with the Queen Vic behind Sonia from EastEnders so it was pretty surreal.

“That’s pretty much the weirdest introduction to any job anyone could ever have.

“‘I’m in EastEnders here, there’s Sonia, and there’s the pub.'”

Fans are questioning how the pair are related as there is going to be romance brewing between the pair.

Freeman confirmed to press, includingExpress.co.uk, that there are “sparks” between Sonia and Reiss.

He added: “He’s [Reiss] introduced to the square, there’s a spark with Sonia and I wouldn’t say he’s a human Dynamo but he’s got a good heart.

“What’s to come is to see whether he can sort of naviage his way through fairly basic social interactions to come out a winner or all alone.

“But I guess that’s going to be revealed down the line.”

EastEnders is available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
