Mary Goskirk (Louise Jameson) has quickly become a hugely loved character in Emmerdale.

Mother to Rhona (Zoe Henry), Mary initially arrived as someone quite forward, she really wasn’t afraid to say what she thinks – which got her in trouble a couple of times!

Now, Mary’s most recent storyline allowed us to learn so much more about her past.

It transpired that Mary is a lesbian but when she was younger, she wasn’t living in a society where she could safely and comfortably come out.

The revelation saw Rhona struggle with the news at first, as she questioned whether her entire family life had been a lie.

Eventually though, Rhona accepted her mother’s sexuality and now, well Mary has never felt so settled.

She’s continuing to assist Marlon (Mark Charnock) in his recovery and recently found a friend in someone very unlikely – Kim Tate (Claire King).

Mary was fascinated by the luxurious lifestyle Kim leads up at Home Farm and, after a crafty bit of work, she ended up at Kim’s enjoying a cup of tea.

During their time together, Mary felt comfortable enough to tell Kim about her sexuality, which was an incredibly powerful and moving moment.

For Louise Jameson, she loves the dynamic between Mary and Kim and, during a chat with Metro.co.uk, she explained how vital she thinks it is to pair the two strong women together:

‘Mary cares desperately, she loves a lot. She hasn’t just come in with the smart one-liners although she has got them up her sleeve. She isn’t just that, she’s a really feisty matriarch. I love it that they’ve made Kim, another very strong woman, they’re at their most vulnerable when they’re with each other.

‘It’s like the only place you are safe is with another very strong woman, you can let your guard down and not be so strong. I think that’s a very interesting piece of writing.

‘I don’t think they’ll ever be lovers’, she added.

‘I think she’s very set in her sexuality, but I do think they’d be wise to use Kim and Mary, so that when there is a problem they’ve got a go-to, to be able to go and explain to the audience, via each other, exactly how they’re feeling.

Teasing what’s ahead for Mary, Louise said:

‘When I started in January, I hit the ground running with five months of really solid work, so Mary’s slightly taking a back seat at the moment.

‘All I’ve had from upstairs is that from mid-November onwards my schedule’s going to be very heavy, so I don’t know if I’m getting love interest or what will be materialising!’.
