  • The Dingles have a long family history on the Yorkshire-based serial drama Emmerdale, dating back almost three decades on the ITV soap.

But their family tree often causes confusion among viewers as there are so many Dingles. Pretty much every episode includes at least one Dingle family member.

Emmerdale still has a number of the Dingle family characters playing pivotal roles on the soap, including Chas Dingle (played by Lucy Pargeter), Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) and Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley).

Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley), Sam Dingle (James Hooton), and Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) all also appear regularly on Emmerdale.

How are the Dingles all related on Emmerdale?

    Cain Dingle

Cain Dingle, played by Jeff Hordley, is the son of former Emmerdale’s Zak Dingle (Steve Halliwell) and the late Faith Dingle (Sally Dexter) who died last year following a battle with cancer.

Faith had been married to Zak’s brother Shadrack (Andy Devine) before cheating on him with his sibling and giving birth to Cain.

Cain has four children – Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb), Kyle Winchester (Huey Quinn) with Amy Wyatt (Natalie Ann Jamieson), and Isaac Dingle (Bobby Dunsmuir) with his present partner Moira Barton (Natalie J Robb).

He is also Nate Robinson’s (Jurell Carter) father – while Nate’s mother is Cara Robinson (Carryl Thomas).

Charity Dingle, played by Emma Atkins, is the daughter of Obadiah (Paul Kopley) and Kathleen Dingle.

Emma Atkins’ character first appeared on Emmerdale in 2000 and is the mother to Debbie Dingle, Ryan Stocks (James Moore), Noah Dingle (Jack Downham) and Moses Dingle (Arthur Cockroft).

Charity is also the cousin of series regular Cain, who is the father to Debbie.

She’s recently rekindled her relationship with Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) who is the brother of Cain’s partner Moira. However, he shares a child with Chloe Harris (Jessie Elland).

    Caleb Milligan

Caleb Milligan (Will Ash) rocked up in the village last December and soon caused a stir among the Dingles.

He’s the half-brother of Cain and Chas Dingle as they share the same mother, Faith Dingle, but the pair did not see eye-to-eye at first as they had not seen each other for decades.

It was revealed earlier this year that Caleb’s father is the late Frank Tate (Norman Bowler) as a result of Faith’s fling. This makes Caleb the half-brother of Frank’s children Zoe Tate (Leah Bracknell) and Chris Tate (Peter Amory) as well as Liam Hammond (Mark Powley) and Jamie Tate (Alexander Lincoln).

Caleb has a son called Nicky Milligan (Lewis Cope) with his ex-wife Ruby who will be making her Emmerdale debut in the New Year, producer Laura Shaw teased to Express.co.uk.

    Chas Dingle

Chas is Cain’s half-sister as the pair are both the children of Faith.

Lucy Pargeter’s character is the daughter of Shadrack Dingle as well, which makes her Zak and Lisa’s niece and Debbie’s cousin.

Chas has one son, Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller), and endured a harrowing storyline in 2018 which saw her second child, Grace, with Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) die.

Chas and Paddy broke up after her affair with the late Al Chapman (Michael Wildman) was exposed. Al was later shot dead by Cain’s 10-year-old son Kyle following a showdown in a remote barn.

    Sam Dingle

Sam was born to Zak Dingle and Nellie Lynch (Maggie Tagney) before Zak’s marriage to Lisa.

Cain and Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor Draper) are Sam’s half-siblings and he has a son named Samson Dingle (Sam Hall).

He is married to Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick) who has been at the centre of a harrowing storyline this year after she was raped by Craig Reed (Ben Addis).

Sam brutally beat Craig up after learning about the attack and left him for dead before Kim Tate’s (Claire King) horse finished him off.

Lydia gave birth to Craig’s child many decades ago when she was a teenager, but the baby sadly died.

    Belle Dingle

Belle is the youngest daughter to Zak and Lisa Dingle and is the half-sister to Emmerdale stalwarts Sam Dingle (James Hooton) and Cain.

She is currently in a relationship with Tom King (James Chase) who returned to the soap earlier this year after leaving Belle broken-hearted several years ago.

Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw confirmed to Express.co.uk the pair are set to be tying the knot on Valentine’s Day – but will their wedding go to plan?

    Aaron Dingle

Aaron is the son of Chas Dingle and Gordon Livesey (Gary Mavers) – with Chas being just 14 years old when she gave birth to him.

Aaron stayed with his dad but Gordon raped him when he was badly behaved. Gordon remarried and had a daughter called Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele) but he continued raping Aaron. In the end, Aaron went to live with Chas.

Liv, who was married to Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson), tragically died last year during October’s Super Soap Week which left Aaron and Vinny heartbroken.

Emmerdale continues weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV.
