Fiona Bruce has triggered a wave of concern as she hosted Question Time with her arm in a sling and with a 'black eye'.

The BBC newsreader was in the city of Wolverhampton on Thursday (October 5) to discuss some of the biggest political stories of the week with members of the public. These included the delayed and partially scrapped plans for HS2, as well as the move by the government to stop anyone under the age of 14 from ever buying nicotine products.

Bruce, 59, was joined in the hall by Jonathan Ashworth, Tony Parsons, Richard Walker, Emma Dabiri and Richard Holden. But before proceeding could get underway, the Antiques Roadshow was pushed to explain her injuries to viewers watching at home.

Speaking to the audience, Fiona explained: "I just thought I'd mention it. It's the least interesting thing in the programme but in case you're wondering.

"I broke my hand and I've got the remnants of a black eye because I fell off a horse," she said. "And that's all I have to say about that."

Fans of the show were quick to take to social media as they tried to figure out what happened to the presenter, with one asking: "Just tuned in. Has Fiona injured her arm?". A second user wrote: "When Fiona said a horse had broken her arm and blacked her eye, she should have joked, 'But I'm in a stable condition' and everything would have been alright."

Fiona has been a staple on the BBC since she first joined the corporation as a researcher for Panorama in 1989. She also made history on the channel, becoming the first woman newsreader on the broadcaster's 10 o'clock news.

Since then, she has gone on to be the host of a number of current affairs programs on the BBC. Some of these shows include Crimewatch, Fake or Fortune? and Real Story.

Bruce is currently married to husband Nigel Sharrocks, whom she met whilst he was the boss of the advertising agency that she worked at. The pair have two grown-up kids – a son born in 1998 and a daughter in 2001.
