Emmerdale is set for a major shake up as new spoilers suggest five characters could leave the famous village next week – including one resident who’s been on the show for 22 years.

After a series of alarming scenes yet to air, three people could go on the run, while two more may also leave as one decides they need to get away.

Gabby Thomas has her eye set on a sunny escape as she makes plans to flee to Portugal, where she could reunite with her grandmother Diane Sugden, who left the village in 2021.

Her growing attraction to Billy Fletcher has led to the young mum’s desire for escape, though it’s not known how long she could be gone for, reports the Mirror. Mortified after she made a pass at him, her exit could see an end to the character’s 22 years on the show.

Gabby, the daughter of Bernice Blackstock and Ashley Thomas, was born on the show on Christmas Day in 2001 and has been a mainstay ever since. She and her little boy could turn their backs on the village for an indefinite period of time.

Her exit may not be the only one though, as Amelia Spencer tries to get her father Dan to go on the run in the wake of his recent court battle. The dad injured young man Lloyd after he was harassing his teen daughter, but Dan’s blow saw Lloyd suffer serious head injuries.

Alongside her young daughter Esther, Amelia suggests they permanently leave the village after becoming concerned her father will end up behind bars for his actions. Dan is hesitant but Amelia is convinced they could make a life for themselves in Ireland, and remain together as a family.

After an incident with Esther, Dan comes round to the idea of running away, fearing he won't survive in prison. The worried dad turns to his friend and boss Cain Dingle for help.

Later, he tells Amelia he’ll go along with the planned escape but urges her not to tell a soul – not even her partner, Noah. Cain then issues Dan and Amelia with ferry tickets, an old car and a burner phone to help with their escape to Ireland.

Soon, Dan, Amelia and Esther set off and leave the village, with sad smiles on their faces as they realise the major new change and weight of their decision.

Viewers will have to tune in to see whether they make it to their destination, or whether Dan is plagued by second thoughts.

Their possible exit follows the shock departure of Bhasker Patel, who played Rishi Sharma for 12 years. Beloved Rishi died in a freak accident just last week. The long-awaited episode finally saw Chris Bisson’s Jai Sharma and Charlotte Bellamy’s Laurel Thomas tie the knot in an intimate church wedding ceremony, but their bliss was short-lived.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour long episode on Thursdays.
