Gavin and Stacey star Ruth Jones has panned reboot plans while confirming a tragic end to Nessa and Smithy's romance.

The actress, who created the hit BBC sitcom alongside James Cordon and played Vanessa Shanessa "Nessa" Jenkins, appeared on Friday's episode (September 30) of Lorraine.

Asked if the series would return, Ruth told host Christine Lampard that there are "no plans" to film another episode.

Gavin and Stacey officially ended in 2010 but the show's cast memorably reunited in 2019 for a surprise Christmas special.

Ruth said: "I got asked is it coming back… and I said, 'well no'.

"There are no plans and that is what I've been saying for the last few years."

During the interview, Ruth also revealed a tragic end to the ill-fated romance of Nessa and Smithy (James Corden).

The show creator predicted Smithy would have accepted Nessa's marriage proposal and they would have gotten married – only to divorce years later.

She explained: "As time's going by, you sort of think, 'If they were going to get married, Nessa and Smithy, they would have got married by now and probably divorced'.

"That much time has gone by!"

While having no immediate plans to reboot Gavin and Stacey, Ruth refused to indefinitely rule out another episode.

She also offered fans a glimmer of hope by confirming she would collaborate with James Corden again in the future, adding: "I think James and I will write together again.

"I don't know if it will be Gavin and Stacey. You can’t predict what will happen in the future so, who knows?"

Earlier this year, Pam star Alison Steadman also shared her doubts and predicted there would never be a new episode.

She told Radio Times: "I doubt it'll go again… but that's what I said in the nine-year gap and I was wrong."
