Good Morning Britain switch off from joke show as they slam segment

GMB: Kate and Ben play a game of 'conkers' to open the show

Good Morning Britain viewers Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway were slammed by viewers for playing a quick game of conkers despite “more important news” needing to be discussed.

Just four minutes into the show and already highlighting the more pressing news, Ben and Kate discussed the possibility of the childhood conkers game becoming an official sport.

He noted: “When we were at school, which of course for you was about the circ 1950s and for me the 80s.

“When we were allowed to play conkers in the playground we used to bake them, so you would soak them in vinegar and bake them, the official group has said finally this year.”

But Kate cut him off and added: “Well they might just have to because of the scarcity of them. Now… we have got some very hard conkers here.

“I don’t know if they have been baked, vinegared or come in their natural form, I don’t know how to do it,” as she began swinging the conker around.

Noticing her action, Ben admitted: “Can I just say, I have already started to shake with the idea of you swinging that towards me, have you ever tried to do this?”

Kate revealed: “No… well I did when I was about five but as you say that was in the 50s… so I have to fire at you?”

Fearing he would get hurt, Ben quickly corrected: “No not at me at the conker,” as Kate teased: “Oh sorry… that was just a fantasy.”

Charlotte Hawkins was on the sideline being their referee and noted: “I am slightly worried about this…”

Kate aggressively swung the conker towards Ben in “Garraway style” and left him to flinch in fear and be called a wimp by his co-star.
