As the This Morning duo took a look back at 2022, one segment they spent a lengthy amount of time on was celebrity scandals from the year. They reflected on all the famous faces whose personal lives had made headlines, from the “Wagatha Christie” trial in the summer to Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s legal battle and more. However, many viewers were quick to point out that Holly and Phillip were involved in a scandal of their own which dominated headlines this year.

During the conversation, Holly, Phillip, Gyles Brandreth and Carol Vorderman also recalled the shocking Academy Awards controversy.

The incident saw actor Will Smith taking to the stage in a rage to slap comedian Chris Rock while the world’s cameras filmed the event.

“Behave yourself! Don’t do this!” Holly commented after Gyles made a joke about how to act during an awards ceremony.

Holly continued: “With him, it took him a very long time to apologise for what he did.

“I think it was three months after the incident.

“He said in a video there was ‘no part of him’ that thinks this was the right thing way to behave,’ quite right there!

“What did this do? I mean he’s fun-loving Will Smith.”

“He remains one of our favourite guests who came here and was just a completely adorable, giving person,” Phillip admitted.

“Something in his head snapped that night.”

Phillip had previously stated how, unlike with celebrity court trials, the famous slap incident is different because it had been “broadcast live to the world”.

Earlier this year, Holly and Phillip enraged Brits in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II’s death when they skipped past the 24-hour-long queue to see the monarch lying in state.

This Morning was flooded with complaints for weeks as some called for their dismissal from the show.

As the group continued to dissect the year’s celebrity stories, furious viewers took to social media to call out Holly and Phillip for being “hypocrites”.

Twitter user @mcgowdavid24 wrote: “#ThisMorning Notice they’re reviewing everything but the queues!”

@Rise_and_grind7 penned: “Like we know what happened when you jumped the Q Phil , it was broadcast to the world #ThisMorning.” (sic)

After Holly’s comments, the same account later posted: “Like these two mugs didn’t apologise immediately for Q-gate..hypocrites #ThisMorning.”

MattWHU68 shared: “Phil and Holly #ThisMorning looking back over the years news stories …Will smith slapping Chris Rock, The Wagatha Christie saga etc ….will they mention their own?”

“Sitting here wondering if @hollywills and @Schofe will mention their queue jumping? #thismorning @thismorning,” @AndrewLazari added.

LushShirley60 echoed this, arguing: “Why are these two STILL presenting and wondering if @hollywills and @Schofe will mention their queue jumping? “

Others were simply bored of hearing the year’s celebrity stories, with @orchidfoxy asking: “Do we need to hear this cr*p again?! #thismorning.”

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
