Home & Away Stewart family now – losing ‘soulmate’ at 21, job U-turn, sad death

The legendary Stewart family are the backbone of Home and Away.

According to fan fiction, the Stewarts have resided in Summer Bay since May 1852 when forefather Angus Stewart arrived from Scotland.

Buy the most well-known face of the clan, is, of course, Alf Stewart. Since 1988, the stern but “goon-natured rogue”, who comes across as grumpy but is actually a big softie, has been a mainstay of the hit Aussie soap.

Alf is also known for his great sayings such as: “Stone the flamin’ crows!”, “ya flamin’ mongrel!” and “ya flamin’ galah!”. The word “flamin’” appears in most of them.

Members of the Stewart family have starred in some of the soap’s most dramatic storylines, from returning from the “dead” to cancer.

Many of them have left the soap, including Alf Stewart himself (for a bit). So in light of the current shock kidnapping storyline on Home and Away, we take a look at where they are now.

Judy Nunn – Ailsa Stewart

Judy played Ailsa Stewart, Alf’s wife and mum to Duncan, from 1988 until she was killed off in 2000 in a heart attack storyline.

In real life though, Judy, 77, was said to have left the soap to concentrate on her books – she’s an accomplished author. She has written numerous YA best-sellers as well as scripts for both Neighbours and Possession.

Judy also specialises in Australian period fiction.

Jodi Gordon – Martha McKenzie

As well as her modelling and acting career, Jodi has been in the headlines several times due to her tumultuous personal life.

She was just 21 when her boyfriend at the time Christopher Burkhardt died from a rare and aggressive form of cancer, aged 23.

Jodi was by Christopher's side when he slipped into a coma and was left "shattered" when he died a week later.

Speaking about the tragic loss, Jodi said: "We used to say to each other, "How perfect are our lives?" We both had great jobs and were in a great relationship. It was all peaches and cream," branding Christopher her "beloved soulmate".

A string of failed relationships followed including a short-lived marriage to rugby league player Braith Anasta, who she has an eight-year-old daughter with.

Most recently, Jodi, 37, who also starred in Neighbours, has admitted her battles with alcohol and depression and how she was forced to undergo immersion therapy in rehab.

Belinda Giblin – Martha Stewart

Belinda played Alf's long-lost wife Martha, who first appeared on the soap back in 1988.

Disappearing for 30 years, she turned her husband's world upside down when she made a dramatic return to Summer Bay back in 2018.

Belinda left earlier this year after undergoing a kidney transplant, leaving fans gutted with her exit.

But off the show, the soap star's life is almost as dramatic as on the Channel 5 show.

Belinda married set designer Axel Bartz in 1984, who she shares two children, a son and a daughter, with.

They first met when Belinda was starring in a touring production of Bedroom Farce and Axel was working as the resident set designer for the South Australian Theatre Company in Adelaide.

Previously speaking about her marriage, Belinda said it could be “explosive” saying they could both be “pig-headed” and “anxious about survival”, with both of them sometimes being unemployed.

Morag Bellingham – Cornelia Frances

Cornelia first appeared as Morag in Summer Bay in 1988, and made on/off appearances as Alf's judge sister for the next 34 years.

Her final TV appearance was in a 2017 episode of Home and Away, before she sadly passed away.

The actress publicly announced that she had been diagnosed with bladder cancer, but still hoped to make an appearance for the Aussie soap's 30th anniversary.

However, despite getting chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, Cornelia lost her battle to the disease in May 2017 at the age of 77, just months before the milestone.

Her former co-stars Ray Meagher and Judy Nunn paid tribute to their co-star, and Channel Seven said in a statement: "Cornelia Frances was a unique person. Her on-screen presence inspired a generation of actors.

"This gift was coupled with an ability to bring a sense of dignity and presence into each room she entered. Her energy and character will be missed."
