Hugh Laurie may have been on our screens for more than 40 years but there is a lot fans may not realise about the actor and comedian.

All the Light We Cannot See has dropped today, Thursday, November 2, on Netflix, starring Aria Mia Lomberti, Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie.

The latter is behind Etienne LeBlanc, Marie-Laure’s (played by Aria Mia Lomberti) great-uncle who welcomes the blind teenager and her dad into his home during the Second World War.

He is part of the French Resistance, putting out anti-German radio broadcasts but with a Nazi unit on the hunt for those responsible, he and his family need to be very careful.

Everything there is to know about actor Hugh Laurie

Hugh Laurie, whose real name is James Hugh Calum Laurie, was born on June 11, 1959, to GP and former Olympic rowing champion William “Ran” Laurie and his wife Patricia.

He grew up in Oxford with a brother and two sisters and attended the Dragon prep school, followed by Eton.

Laurie started studying archaeology and anthropology at Selwyn College, Cambridge, where he got involved in the rowing team but growing up, he didn’t know his dad’s own success in the sport.

Ran competed at the infamous 1936 Berlin Olympics which was overseen by Adolf Hitler where he won a gold medal.

Laurie told LBC’s Full Disclosure podcast: “I remember my parents laughing a lot because we were in a boat, we’d gone fishing, and my dad took the oars. I said to my mother, ‘Does he know how to row?’

“And they laughed. And I said, ‘What are you laughing at?’ And they didn’t tell me.

“They didn’t tell me until years later that he had actually won an Olympic medal for that… not in a fishing boat.”

Hugh had his own run of success with the sport when he was a member of the junior coxed pair that won the British national title before representing GB at the 1977 Junior World Rowing Championships.

Sadly, his career in rowing ended all too soon as he had to give up after contracting glandular fever and found a new love in performing.

Laurie joined the Cambridge Footlights comedy and drama club where he met his future comedic partner Stephen Fry who he was introduced to through his then romantic partner and later friend, Emma Thompson.

Following university, the pair performed A Bit of Fry and Laurie together, before going on to Jeeves and Wooster and later became known for Blackadder with Rowan Atkinson.

His fame reached international heights though when he started playing Dr Gregory House in the medical drama House, MD in 2004.

So much so that in 2011, Laurie was listed by the Guinness World Records as the most watched leading man on television thanks to House and one of the highest paid actors in television drama at the time, reportedly making £250,000 per episode.

Laurie has been in other popular series like The Night Manager, Roadkill and Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?, which he also wrote and directed.

Away from acting, the star has a passion for music, releasing his Blues album Let Them Talk in 2011, followed by his second album, Didn’t It Rain, two years later.

Laurie has been married to his wife Jo Green since 1989 and has three children together, Charlie, Bill and Rebecca.
