Emmerdale took a devastating turn during Wednesday night’s episode, as Eric Pollard revealed he’s been dealt a terminal diagnosis.

Fans of the ITV soap watched on in horror on November 1st as Eric confessed to Mandy Dingle in the salon that he’s been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. During the Dingles whodunit mystery, Mandy was forced to provide an alibi – and it turned out she was with Pollard.

Mandy first assumed it was Eric’s wife Brenda who was unwell, but Eric set her right, blurting: “It’s me who’s unwell. I don’t know why I’m getting this upset, I’m knocking on. I’ve had it lightly so far.” Mandy then quizzed him: “Is it your dicky ticker again?”

But Eric was sobbing as he confirmed: “They were checking up on that and I mentioned a few other niggles. I’ve been having numbness in my fingers, and my toes are tingling. I’ve been feeling less steady on my feet. It’s Parkinson’s.”

Fans soon took to X – formerly known as Twitter – to share their thoughts, and plenty were sobbing themselves. One user penned: "Quick everyone – protect Eric at all costs! #Emmerdale."

Another agreed: "Don't let anything happen to Eroc, we've already lost Rishi [crying emoji] #Emmerdale." A third chimed in with: "Holy s**t not poor Eric having Parkinsons [sad emoji] #Emmerdale."

A fourth demanded: "I will repeat again #emmerdale. Don't you DARE kill off Eric Pollard." A fifth begged: "Eric is making me cry right now wtf!!! #Emmerdale."

Speaking about taking on the new storyline, Pollard star Chris Chittell said: “I feel really privileged to be given this storyline. Parkinson’s is indiscriminate, deceptive and wickedly unkind targeting so many. I want to do this storyline justice for the most courageous of people who are having to bear the brunt of this condition.”

While Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw told press: “When Eric Pollard is diagnosed with Parkinson's he's naturally very scared and unsure of what the condition means for his future. The unique position of a show like Emmerdale means we can tell this story really authentically over a long period of time and we can really shine a light on what a diagnosis like this means and follow Pollard on his journey of learning to live with it.

“Working closely with Parkinson's UK, who have been guiding us through every step of the way, we hope seeing Pollard's story helps to raise awareness of Parkinson’s and show the day to day reality of those living with it, as well as the impact it can have on friends, family and the local community.”

Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world, with around 153,000 people in the UK living with it. Parkinson’s UK are working closely with the soap to make the storyline as authentic as possible.
