John Fashanu has a bizarre strategy for coping with the highs and lows of skating – he is treating the ice like it is his wife.
The 60-year-old footie ace got the advice from his Dancing on Ice pro partner to encourage him to be more “gentle” and “patient” on the rink.
But the reportedly three-times wed star admits his ex-wives might not be so convinced by his method.

Speaking about the unusual approach suggested by Alexandra Schauman, inset, the ex-England, Wimbledon and Aston Villa star revealed: “Alex, my coach, she said something which has stayed with me all the time, ‘Treat the ice like you would treat your wife’, meaning softly, gently, be patient.
“So now when I go down I don’t act like I am in a tantrum – I just go down with a bit of composure and get up gently.
“My wife doesn’t agree – that’s why she left me.”
John, who is the oldest celebrity on this year’s show, said he is happy to try something “completely new”, adding: “There is no other sport which is like this, this is a new thing (for me) completely.”
Describing the pre-show medical checks, he added: “They were stringent. They had to check that we were OK, and as a footballer I’m used to all these checks. Thank goodness there’s nothing wrong with me at all.”
He is among the 11 stars trying to impress the judges on Sunday night including Olympic gold medallists Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.
John and Alexandra, who is dancing on her ninth series of the show, to Eat My Goal by Collapsed Lung.
In his former career, he was a centre-forward from 1978 until 1995, most notably in an eight-year spell at Wimbledon in which he won the FA Cup in 1988 and scored over 100 goals in all competitions.
