Law and Order SVU is preparing to say goodbye to one of its best-loved characters as detective Amanda Rollins steps down from her role. Kelli Giddish joined the NBC drama in season 13 and in August 2021 she announced she was leaving the show. A date has now been set for her character’s exit, but why is she leaving?

Why is Kelli Giddish leaving Law and Order SVU as Amanda Rollins?

Kelli Giddish’s last Law and Order appearance will be on December 8 as NBC schedules Amanda’s exit for the end of 2022. 

In a statement earlier this year, Kelli revealed season 24 would be her last, having starred in 11 seasons of the hit show. 

She said: “Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life. I’ve been so fortunate to be a part of the Law & Order family for the last 12 years.

“There is simply no other character on TV like Rollins. She’s grown and changed, and I have as well. I started on this show when I was in my late 20s and I’m grateful I got to spend so many of my adult years with Rollins in my life.”

She thanked the cast and crew for their support and added: “I’m so excited to take all the things I have learned in my time on ‘SVU’ and put them toward everything that’s next to come.”

With this in mind, it appears the star simply wants to move on to pastures new, having been a part of the same series for such a long time. 

The actress is still set to guest star on Law and Order Organized Crime later this season. 

When she first spoke out about her exit there had been speculation from viewers that the character was ready to give up her badge. 

The actress joined the Dick Wolf drama in 2011 after appearing in guest-star roles on both SVU and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, so she already had plenty of experience.

Having been a part of the Law and Order world for so long, she is keen to explore new avenues in her career. 

The news of her exit did not go down well with fans of the show and they were looking for someone to point the finger at. 

David Graziano, the new showrunner, was tagged in some angry social media posts and he responded to viewers’ concerns. 

After responding to the actress’s announcement with a crying emoji, he explained: “You might take a moment to entertain the idea that things are more complex than they appear in a world of emojis and tweets.

“All I’ll say is Kelli has handled this with the most incredibly classy comportment.

“She is, without a doubt, one of the finest industry professionals I’ve come across in my 24 years of writing for television.

“I’m saddened by her looming exit. It’ll be my lucky day if I ever get to write for her again.”

At this moment in time, it is too early to say how the character will be leaving the series or whether the door will be left open for her in the future. 

Wolf Entertainment responded to her Instagram announcement with: “Always a member of the Wolfpack. Thank you.”

They followed the comment with a heart emoji as Amanda will always be a valued member of the Law and Order team. 

Will Kelli’s character be killed off in an explosive final episode? Or will she simply hang up her badge and move on to another role elsewhere? 

Viewers are hoping Amanda does not meet her untimely death, but in the world of TV, no one is safe. 

Law and Order SVU airs on NBC on Thursdays at 9pm ET
