Singer-songwriter Matt, who on Monday was confirmed to be taking part in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, has only recently returned to the UK after settling in America following his success in 1980s band Bros. He admitted he is “treated like part of the family” when he’s back in the UK and felt the time was right to leave the USA behind as he chatted to Sally Nugent and Ben Thompson on Tuesday’s BBC Breakfast.

“Nice to see you, welcome back we should say as well,” Ben stated. “So you’re back in the UK?”

“Yeah, I’m four days on the ground from the States,” the 53-year-old replied.

He continued: “It’s been really nice, I actually finally made the move.

“I have a home, all my stuff, I have a place in London now.

“So it’s incredible, it’s a lot to take in but I’m happy to be home.”

“Any why now?” probed Sally, intrigued by the timing of the big move.

Matt stated: “You know, I think I was coming in and out of the UK and different countries, and doing incredible things like the BAFTAs and all that stuff, releasing music and doing shows and then coming back and hiding.

“[I was] almost reclusive, you know? And I just felt like it was the time in my life where I want to be home and play frisbee at the park.

“And just really live and get out in my own way, really.

“Just loosen up a little bit and come back home and I get treated so well here.”

“And quite a change of pace, because you had a residency in Vegas-” Ben pointed out.

“For years,” Matt court in to confirm. Ben specified: “Yeah, 11 years.”

The presenter added: “So when you say you’re moving back, literally four days on the ground, is all your stuff on a container ship somewhere in the Atlantic now? Making its way back to the UK.”

“Some of it is! I’ve got an estate sale of my whole life,” he confessed.

A shocked Sally asked: “You’re selling everything?”

As Matt confirmed he was, Sally exclaimed: “No! Like what, what are you selling?”

“My cars, my belongings, my furniture,” Matt answered.

“I’m keeping my art, some of my crystals and my dog is currently scheduled to arrive.

“It’s a big move, emotionally. My mum is buried in the US so there’s a lot of stuff to arrange in my mind but it’s something that I need to do for myself.

“I need to believe truly that the unknown is a thing to look forward to.”

When asked about how significant the change was, he went on: “Yeah, I think that my lifestyle is different here.

“But I also get treated like part of the family in this country, I get treated very, very well.”

BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
