Love Island has been announced as the most-complained about TV show of 2022, judging by the of complaints made to Ofcom.
The most complained about TV moment of 2022 was on a Love Island episode, which aired on July 17 and received 2,630 complaints relating to “alleged misogynistic and bullying behaviour by some contestants in the villa."
The episode in question saw the infamous movie night challenge take place, with Luca Bish taking umbrage at partner Gemma Owen for speaking to Billy Brown, with the fishmonger accusing her of “flirting” – despite her insisting otherwise.
This degree of possessive behaviour raised alarm bells for some fans, with some even contacting Women's Aid, who later confirmed they were in talks with ITV over the episode.
OK!'s columnist LalalaLetMeExplain branded Luca's behaviour as misogynistic and a "red flag", writing: "We’ve now witnessed multiple occasions where he’s become angry and stressed about Gemma talking to other men (big red flag).
"Luca’s insecurities plague his relationship with Gemma. I think he thinks she’s too good for him and it’s turning him crazy. Does he love her or is he just obsessed?"
Ofcom concluded that no formal investigation was needed into this due to the behaviour being put into context.
The second most complained about TV event of the year was Matt Hancock’s inclusion on I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! which prompted 1,890 complaints between November 6 and 27.
At the time the broadcasting regulator insisted they couldn't rule over who might appear on the show.
Ofcom release a statement, which read: "It’s worth being aware that under our rules, in principle – and taking into account freedom of expression – there's no ban on any particular person taking part in programmes.
"However, if the mere presence of a person is likely to cause offence, we would expect broadcasters to take steps to mitigate or justify that offence. How they do that editorially, is up to them.
"As usual, we'll be assessing all these complaints against our broadcasting rules, before deciding whether or not to investigate."
Love Island then appears twice more on the list – in fourth and seventh places, both also relating to “complaints related to alleged misogynistic and bullying behaviour by some contestants in the villa”.
There were a number of moments in this years Love Island that had viewers accusing some villa residents of bullying others, a major one of these was the July 19 episode, which saw the islanders take part in a Snog, Marry, Pie challenge.
During the episode, dancer and model Tasha Ghouri was left in tears over comments Dami Hope and Luca Bish made before delivering a pie to her face.
However, ultimately Ofcom decided against taking action over these accusations of bullying and misogyny.
