Love Island voting figures announced with tight race for second place confirmed

Love Island has released the voting figures for each couple in the wake of Monday night's (July 31) dramatic summer finale.

Host Maya Jama crowned Sammy Root and Jess Harding as winners, much to the surprise of ITV2 viewers who expected overwhelming bookies' favourites Whitney Adebayo and Lochan Nowacki to come out on top.

The result saw couples Ella Thomas and Tyrique Hyde, and Molly Marsh and Zach Noble finish in third and fourth place respectively.

Delighted Sammy and Jess, who will share a cool £50,000 after their victory, gained 34.57% of the public vote.

The race for second place was a tight affair, meanwhile, with Whitney and Lochan's 26.85% just pipping that of Ella and Tyrique's 24.21%.

Molly and Zach lagged much further behind with just 14.37% of the share, however.

Viewers soon took to social media following broadcast, with some claiming the results had been "rigged".

One disgruntled Twitter user wrote: "I need to see them number because wtf."

Another fumed: "This is rigged."

A third scathed: "Nah. I'm done with this show. Whit was robbed. She's still a winner to me and wishing her the best with all what's next to come for her."

And a fourth added: "Surely, they announced the wrong people being the winners, I mean there was error after error tonight. Someone fess up. The only possible winners was Whitney and Lochan. Anything other than that is wrong."

It comes amid reports Love Island's winter series has been axed for a second time.

Instead, according to an insider, it will be replaced by an All Stars edition featuring past contestants from the UK, US and Australian versions of the show.

The source told the MailOnline: "The winter series of Love Island has been axed for a second time… viewers just aren't interested in watching the show twice a year. It will be replaced by a brand new All Stars series, which will feature former Islanders who are still looking for love.

"In terms of iconic Love Island stars who are now happily married including the likes of Olivia Attwood, producers are looking into cameo appearances so that they still involve fan favourites from the years gone by."

In another first later this year, Big Brother will air on ITV for the first time.

The reality show's iconic logo appeared in an advert during the Love Island final and looked completely different to its past incarnations on Channels 4 and 5, with the eye now multi-coloured and filled with a variety of symbols.

The series is set to run from October for "up to six weeks" with housemates coming from "all walks of life".
