Bodies: Official trailer

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Bodies on Netflix

Not to be confused with Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio’s early 2000s British medical drama series, Netflix recently dropped its ambitious and epic new science fiction series Bodies, which may appeal to fans of time travel series Dark and also features a large cast.

The show is slated as a limited series with the creator reluctant to do more, so there won’t be a season two.

The show is adapted from Si Spencer’s 2014 graphic novel Bodies and charts four detectives across different time zones all trying to crack the same case after a corpse is found in Longharvest Lane in London’s East End.

Did they change time and break the loop?

Here’s the main plot points from episode eight titled Know You Are Loved, which marks the finale of Bodies.

The short answer was yes after the detectives all worked together across the various periods to avert crisis.

1890

Iris Maplewood (played by Shira Haas) went back to 1890 and met Alfred Hillinghead (Kyle Soller) in prison and told him she knew he’d falsely confessed to the Longharvest Lane murder.

She tried to explain she was from the future but Hillinghead didn’t want to hear it until she asked why he’d carved his name on the wall.

When he said he’d “left a message for the future”, everything seemed to make sense for Hillinghead.

Iris said she had travelled to break the loop and informed Hillinghead how Julian Harker/Elias Mannix (Stephen Graham) would marry his daughter Polly Hillinghead (Synnove Karlsen) and many people would die.

The Victorian detective was then taken away to meet Harker with Hillinghead telling him everything Maplewood had informed him about in the future.

Hillinghead said the Morleys lied to him and even Harker/Mannix lied to himself and he wouldn’t die loved.

Instead, he would die alone and full of regret with Hillinghead refusing to reveal who told him all this.

After this, Hillinghead was taken away and killed with his words haunting Harker/Mannix.

Harker/Mannix went on to have an unhappy marriage to Polly after admitting his part in her father’s death, realising he wasn’t loved at all after she discovered the Longharvest Lane corpse in their basement.

1941

In the second timeline, Harker/Mannix made one last secret record after realising Hillinghead had been right all along. In it, he said everything he’d ever said was a lie.

Detective Charlie Whiteman (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd) went to Harker/Mannix’s house with the intention of killing him.

But before he could do so, Harker/Mannix told Whiteman he needed to get the final record hidden and safely to detective Shahara Hasan (Amaka Okafor).

Whiteman then killed the businessman, bringing his life to an end but not yet the loop.

The detective found himself with Harker/Mannix’s people on his trail as he ran to hide the record, carving his name into the same wall on Longharvest Lane where the others had left their mark.

He made it to the pub frequented by police officers and hid the record behind a photograph of himself.

Whiteman knew it was over for him as he refused to come out of the pub and was killed by Harker/Mannix’s men.

2053

In the future, Hasan and Gabriel Defoe (Tom Mothersdale) wondered why nothing had changed.

They headed to Longharvest Lane, where Whiteman’s name was on the wall, telling her to go to the pub. But the pub was destroyed in the blast 30 years ago.

2023

Hasan travelled back through The Throat to 2023 and found the record in the pub.

She got the young Elias (Gabriel Howell) to listen to the record with the troubled teen deciding not to go through with the deadly bomb and so changing the course of events and averting the dystopian future of 2053.

Young Elias also vanished into thin air and this timeline and loop wiped away.

Final scenes

Time was completely changed with Hillinghead still alive and going about his day in Victorian London before catching the eye of handsome journalist Henry Ashe (George Parker).

In 1941, Whiteman was accosted by Esther Jankovsky (Chloe Raphael) as she ran off down the street very much alive.

Finally, in 2023 Hasan admitted she was worried about the future as she travelled by taxi with her driver turning out to be none other than Maplewood.
