Piers Morgan skewers Lewis as he fails to explain COVID death rate: ‘Avoiding question!’

Brexit: Brandon Lewis calls for no tariffs on internal trade

Piers Morgan, 55, and his Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid, 50, were joined by Brandon Lewis, 49, towards the end of the programme and the interview soon turned fiery. With the latest figures showing the UK is now top of the list with regards to coronavirus death rates, the outspoken journalist wanted answers as to why so many people were dying. As the Government minister tried his best to draw comparisons to the international stage, the host lost his cool as he declared the politician was “letting down viewers”.

Towards the end of the interview, Morgan said: “I’ve tried. Viewers can make up their minds as to whether your response is adequate.

“Viewers won’t understand, they’ll just see you avoiding the question,” he added, to which Mr Lewis replied: “ I haven’t avoided the question, I’ve been upfront with you, Piers.”

“You can’t think of a single reason why so many people are dying in this country,” the broadcaster hit back.

“Those averages shift on a week-to-week basis,” the Government minister explained, justifying why the UK has only just made it to the top of the list.

The journalist then pressed his guest on how many people are dying every day as a result of contracting COVID-19.

“Too many. I know someone who passed away just last week,” Mr Lewis said, adding: “Piers, in terms of numbers, every single loss of life is one too many.”

Morgan replied: “It’s very hard to work out how to stop people dying if you don’t have any reason for why they’re all dying.

“Do you understand the problem? To work out how to stop so many people dying and to get us lower down on that list, you’ve got to have a logical assessment and reason for why so many are dying.

“Until you get that, the confidence levels we can have in you as a Government for correcting his appalling situation of us having the worst death rate in the world…it’s impossible.

“How can we feel confident if none of you are prepared to give any reason for why this is happening?” he asked before concluding the interview.
