Pirates of the Caribbean fans have only received brief updates about the series over the past few years. The last movie, 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, marked the final appearance of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow before he was axed by Disney. Since then, reports surfaced that Margot Robbie would be involved in the next step for the series – but she has just delivered an unexpected update.

Robbie has now spoken out about the future of the swashbuckling franchise in a new interview. 

She revealed her upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is now “dead”.

She said: “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we thought would’ve been really cool.” (Via Vanity Fair)

The 32-year-old Aussie actor added: “I guess they don’t want to do it,” while speaking about Disney. 

The Harley Quinn actress revealed back in 2020 that she was bringing a Pirates film to cinema that included “lots of girl power”.

Robbie went on to confirm that the movie was being penned by the Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson.

She said: “It’s too early to talk about it. I love Christina, obviously. I’m not a producer on Pirates, so I’ll sit back and kind of wait for the process.”

She added: “We’re really, really excited at the prospect of adding obviously a very key female element to that world.”

With Robbie’s version of Pirates of the Caribbean now spiked, the future of the series is a complete mystery.

The latest movie in the franchise left a massive window open for future sequels, as it reintroduced the characters played by Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley (Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan, respectively). 

Unfortunately, because of Depp’s unexpected exit from the series, there doesn’t seem to be any movement on continuing this epic story in the near future. 

Depp was reportedly dropped by Disney in 2018 after his ex-wife, Amber Heard, wrote an op-ed that accused him of domestic abuse. 

After that, the pair engaged in an extremely public court battle over libel and defamation. 

During the court’s proceedings, the Edward Scissorhands actor was asked if he would ever return to the franchise. 

He was quizzed by the lawyer: “The fact is, Mr Depp, if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a Pirates of the Caribbean film, correct?”

Depp confirmed: “That is true, Mr Rottenborn.”

Despite Depp’s exit from the series, his fans have continued to staunchly defend him while demanding that Disney reinstate him as Jack Sparrow. 

Shortly after his exit, fans started a petition to get him back in the film series. It is titled “We want JOHNNY DEPP back as CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW”.

At the time of writing, it has almost 879,000 signatures from impassioned fans.
