RuPaul’s Drag Race star speaks out after blackface controversy

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars | Season 8 Official Trailer

RuPaul’s Drag Race finalist Pearl has apologized and removed an Instagram post that depicted her with darkened skin.

The character has come under fire from fellow queens, including The Vixen and Silky Nutmeg Ganache.

In the post, she donned a blonde wig, pink tracksuit and fake nails – but also darkened her skin and wore large fake lips.

“The character I posted this morning was not meant to resemble any other background other than my own,” Pearl wrote on her Instagram Story.

“She’s platinum blonde/blue eyes & meant to have 2000’s britney-esque tan.

“I certainly didn’t mean to hurt anyone and will refrain from using any kind of tan at all when creating characters in the future.

“I’ve removed the post as to not continue to offend people.” (sic)

A number of social media users accused Pearl of blackface, and have continued to do so in the comments of her other Instagram posts.

Season nine contestant The Vixen wrote on her social media profile: “When people carelessly play with blackface and using slurs etc I think the public outrage overshadows the private hurt that we go through.

“These daily reminders that this world isn’t safe, welcoming or sensitive to our feelings is overwhelming.”

“White people paint their skin the shade of people who have to defend their skin shade and their surprised they have to defend their choice.”

She later added: “When you take the time to cover your skin neck and hands a darker shade in 2023 it’s INTENTIONAL.

“She’s aware of the implications, she’s seen the backlash before she still decided to disregard who it may offend to create a character nobody asked for.”
