NTAs: Ian McKellen congratulates Sarah Lancashire
Sir Ian McKellen and Sarah Lancashire were caught in an awkward moment during the National Television Awards after she was given the Special Recognition award.
As Sarah walked onto the stage to accept her award, she went to embrace Ian but the pair were left in an awkward limbo as Ian leant in to kiss her.
Taking to the stage to accept her award, she expressed: “You have no idea what it is like to have so many lovely things said about you.
“By so many people that you love and admire. I have been so very fortunate to spend my working life doing a job that I love.
“Made possible by brilliantly talented people and I am exceptionally lucky to enjoy every moment of it.”

She went on: “Also, enablers who stand very quietly in the wings without expectations, or due credit and they are my family, my husband, my children, my friends, my agent.
“Of course, a very vital component in all of this is you the audience. Because without you all this would come to a crashing halt.
“So carry on doing what you are doing, keep watching and we will keep doing what we do and thank you so so much for this. It is very special.”
Sarah and the Happy Valley team has also won an award for Returning Drama and Best Drama Performance.

Unfortunately, James Norton, who plays Tommy Lee Royce, was unable to be at the ceremony and his absence didn’t go unnoticed.
Speaking in the winners room about his absence, Sarah admitted: “I believe James will be on stage.
“We are missing a few vital people, James Norton of course, Siobhan Finneran, they’re all working…their filming schedules. They just can’t be here.”
She also shut down any rumours of the show returning for a fourth series and said: “It was a story told as a trilogy which has been a great way to tell a story arch.
“The danger is you carry on and it losses its potency but I think this way it keeps it on top.”
Happy Valley is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
