Shetland fans issue the same complaint as they fume over ‘predictable’ series

Shetland: Howell attempts to escape Calder and Tosh

Shetland fans issued the same complaint on Wednesday night as they tuned in to watch the fourth instalment of the BBC series.

DI Ruth Calder (played by Ashley Jensen) and Tosh (Alison O’Donnell) were back as they continued to solve the murder of Ellen Quinn (Maisie Norma Seaton).

The investigation appeared to come to a head as Tosh was prepared to charge the suspect they had in custody.

In the interview room, the new prime suspect talked about his special connection to Ellen and claimed that his funeral rites were an act of love, part of an ancient religion.

While Grace (Phyllis Logan) berated DI Calder and Tosh over their handling of the case, Stella (Dawn Steele) was stunned to discover Ellen had a secret friendship with Tom Knox (Dylan Blore) and decided to visit him.

Following Jean’s (Jennifer Black) shocking revelation, DI Calder sat on her fears about her father and Stella’s relationship.

However, when her secret background check on Amma returned a surprising link to Ellen, the detective was forced to come clean to an unimpressed Tosh.

When secret letters signed off with the mysterious symbol are uncovered at the home of Tosh’s prime suspect, the team asked if his pen pal might be an accomplice to murder.

At the same time, hospital security records brought one of Ellen’s friends into the frame.

Tosh and DI Calder tracked their latest suspect down to a remote location where they made a startling discovery.

Following the fourth instalment, fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the series so far, and while many love Ashley as the new female lead, others are unimpressed with the storyline.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, @irisesgirl stated: “Losing a bit with the new #Shetland, bit predictable and missing that Jimmy.”

@CathBarton1 said: “It grieves me to say it, but we’ve given up on #Shetland. Just no idea what’s going on.”

While @EdemaRuh9 pleaded: “#shetland. Come back @djhenshall, please. This new series is dreadful.”

“I’m sorry to say that #Shetland isn’t quite as good… and it’s nothing to do with Jimmy Perez… it’s the backstories.. the stuff around the characters… when was the last time Tosh talked to Donnie, her husband, or mentioned her daughter??? The characters aren’t as rounded,” @alcanlin pointed out.

@Fitz90MARK claimed: “First time I’ve watched this prog. It started so good. So promising. Now drifting rambling/ #Shetland.”

@DebbieBlackma14 wrote: “I miss Jimmy and Duncan #Shetland.”

However, another fan disagreed as they shared: “I’m enjoying the new look Shetland just as much as the old. Possibly slightly more. The female leads are good.” (ic)

Shetland returns next Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One.
