We certainly didn’t have Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) down as a hero in Coronation Street but upcoming episodes may prove us wrong as he reveals his idea to try and save the Rovers Return pub.
The future of the boozer is in jeopardy because of finance problems. Poor Jenny (Sally Ann Matthews) is struggling to keep things afloat and in order to try and balance things out, she increases the rent for the B&B, cuts shifts and ups prices for food and drink.
To try and impress Philip and Henry Newton (George Banks), who partly own the brewery firm, Newton and Ridley, Jenny and Daisy (Charlotte Jordan) organise a posh event, but they’re disappointed when a croaky Glenda (Jodie Prenger) reveals that she’s lost her voice and can’t perform.
Philip is impressed, however, when he finds out that Glenda had booked a singer called Glyn Young.
But when an elderly man with hearing aids arrives, Jenny, Glenda and Daisy are convinced the evening will be a total flop.
After the event, Henry gently breaks the news to Jenny that having looked at the accounts, the brewery isn’t prepared to buy the Rovers and hands her the contact details of a developer.
In the week, a despondent Jenny tells Daisy that a developer is coming to value the pub.
Meanwhile, in the Kabin, Steve and George (Tony Maudsley) reveal that they’ve set up a crowdfunding page to try and save the Rovers.
But will it be enough?
Or will the Weatherfield residents welcome new owners if they can’t save the business themselves?
