Welsh dancer Amy talked about how her partner James Bye was being “uncharacteristically silent” moments before they took to the dancefloor on Saturday’s Strictly Come Dancing. Explaining he had been nervous, the EastEnders star was noticeably quiet before he and Amy performed their jive to the nation. Speaking on BBC spin-off series Strictly – It Takes Two, Amy explained she had been worried about James and had repeatedly asked him: “Are you okay?”

Unfortunately, James made a couple of mistakes in his routine, which were picked up by the judges.

However, the actor detailed how much he had enjoyed being on the famous dancefloor as he reflected on his energetic routine.

“We need to talk about that Jive!” It Takes Two host Rylan Clark exclaimed when he was joined by James and Amy.

He added: “You were full of beans! You look like you lived your best life on that dancefloor!”

“I had the best time on that dancefloor!” James agreed. “Seconds before, I was nervous, but I just got into it.

“The whole evening of that first night just lifted you up.”

“Strictly took you over!” Rylan summarised as the Martin Fowler star confirmed: “It took care of me that night.”

Turning his attention to Amy’s concern, Rylan pointed out: “You said you were a bit nervous… Amy, you said before he went on he was uncharacteristically very silent.

“And we know that you’re not quite silent backstage, you’re having the best time of your life!”

Turning to Amy, the host probed: “Were you a bit worried at one point?”

“I really was,” Amy confessed. “And I just kept saying, ‘Are you okay?’ and you were like…”

Amy silently nodded her head, impersonating the 38-year-old.

She added: “Then we practiced and it kept going wrong, didn’t it?”

“Yeah… and it continued to,” James recalled sadly, to which Rylan replied: “Well, I wasn’t going to mention it…

“Let’s get it out of the way, there were a few little mistakes that went on during the routine but he picked it straight back up again, can I just say?

“You composed yourself and you went, ‘This is where I’m going, go,’ you must have been so proud of him [Amy].”

“Yeah, he really held it together and do you know what? He kept the performance going as well,” Amy remarked.

“And the energy, so yeah, I was super proud,” the dancer beamed.

Despite a rocky start to the dancefloor, James was also praised by the judges.

Craig remarked: ” I think your upper body needs work, all the steps were there – sometimes.”

Before adding: “But, they need to be danced with a little more ease I think, that’s what Shirley means with the breathing.”

The flamboyant judge then declared: “But, I think you did a really, really great job.”

Strictly – It Takes Two continues on Tuesday at 6.30pm on BBC One.
