Strictly Come Dancing sensation Gorka Marquez has opened up about his fear of missing out on his children’s milestones, as he continues to work as a professional dancer on tour.
The dancing star, 32, is a proud father to two children, Mia and Thiago, after his fiancé Gemma Atkinson welcomed their second baby, back in July.
Documenting their parenting journey as part of a new series, Gemma and Gorka: Life Behind the Lens, Gorka admitted parenthood had been far from smooth sailing, as he shared his regrets at having missed out on several key moments in daughter Mia’s life as he had been on tour with Strictly at the time.
In a candid discussion, Gorka said: “It’s hard for me because I’m away quite a lot with my job. "
"Sometimes I feel like I’m missing some of the best things of parenthood. When Mia was born I was on tour, came home for the labour and the birth, and then three days after that I have to go again."
He then went on to explain how things would be different this time, as he intended to be more present in Thiago’s life so he didn’t miss out on those key moments.
He added: "Hopefully this time around we have more time together.”
Opening up about her experience of Gorka’s absence, Gemma then admitted that while he was on tour, there were some weeks where she barely saw him, with the star only returning home for three hours hours at a time.
Reflecting on the experience, Gemma told the cameras: “Gorka is about to head out on his latest dance tour, which means that work and home life are a balancing act.” The show then cut to the family of three enjoying some well-earned time together.
Describing family time as “precious”, Gorka then added: “Family time is precious, even if we don’t always see eye to eye.”
The couple then engaged in a quiet spot of banter over whether or not Gorka liked what Gemma was wearing (the answer being that he would reserve commenting!)
At the end of their time together, Gorka headed off to work, leaving Gemma to take care of Mia. Admitting this was a regular occurrence, Gemma explained: “That’s literally it every weekend. We have him home for about two, three hours and then he has to go on to the next city or the next tour bus or the next production.
“At the minute, when it’s just the two of us, it’s alright. But in a few months, I’ll be with a baby carrier, or a pram and Mia and two dogs!”
