Strictly Come Dancing star Tony Adams revealed he previously turned down an offer to appear on the hugely popular BBC One dance competition six years ago before he signed up for the upcoming 20th series.

The former England footballer, 55, explained that the reason he turned down a position on the Saturday night show had nothing to do with the lack of payment, as he reassured viewers that “the money being good” at the time.

Tony confessed the reason he turned down the role was because he was feared he wouldn’t be taken seriously as a football coach after his TV stint.

He would have danced the night away alongside memorable politician Ed Balls, Laura Whitmore, fellow sportsman Greg Rutherford and series winner Ore Oduba.

The Arsenal footballer opened up to the Mirror about his conflictions on whether or not to sign up to the beloved ballroom dance competition alongside several sportsmen before him.

He told the publication: “One of the main reasons I turned down chances to go on Strictly Come Dancing – despite the money on offer being good – was because I was concerned about not being taken seriously as a football coach after it.”

Luckily, the star has had a change of heart after six years and is now more excited than ever to squeeze into the skintight outfits.

Already looking forward to the slew of fake tans and sequinned outfits, the sportsman admitted: “To say I'm excited is an understatement.

“The lure of the sequins and the call of the salsa has me swapping my battered old football boots for Strictly soft shoes.

“I can’t wait to meet my partner. God help her!” he joked.

Tony is now ready to take on the complex dance routines ahead of him and will join the likes of Fleur East and Will Mellor on the dance floor as part of this year’s line-up.

It comes after fellow contestant Matt Goss reassured fans that he if not afraid of the ‘Strictly curse’ and that he just wants to have fun on the epic annual dance competition.

The Bros singer, 53, reassured fans that his girlfriend Chantal Brown is backing him on the BBC contest and is unfazed by the legendary curse which has seen several former contestants find love over the years.
