The Chase fans ‘work out’ the origin behind Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett's nickname on the hugely popular daytime gameshow.

Therre are six Chasers on the ITV quiz show, who all have their own unique nicknames known as The Menace, The Governess, The Vixen, The Dark Destroyer, The Sinnerman and The Beast.

But viewers might be surprised to know that the decision behind their comic book villain titles is by no means an accident.

Now, one eagle-eyed viewer has shared their theory behind Mark’s terrifying nickname – and it has nothing to do with his tall stature.

Taking to Twitter, one user shared their thoughts behind his ominous nickname with their loyal legion of fans.

They wrote: “You think The Beast is called that because he is almost 7ft tall and a big chap. But ‘La Bette’ means ‘The Beast’ in French” alongside a ‘mind blown’ gif.

But fellow Chaser Paul ‘The Sinnerman’ Sinha chimed in that there was also some truth to the obvious reason behind his nickname.

During an episode of This Morning, the TV star confessed: “He scares the bejesus out of the contestants so we call him The Beast.”

In addition to his official nickname on the show, his adoring fans have since branded him by other names online, including Beastie Boy, The Transatlantic Giant and The Bad Boy of Quizzing.

Alongside original Chaser Mark, Anne ‘The Governess’ Hegerty also shares a unique story behind her now legendary nickname.

During rehearsals for the ITV show, Anne was originally given the nickname as ‘The Headmistress’ by The Chase bosses.

But in 2015, the egghead revealed how her name was changed just hours before they started filming the first series.

She told viewers: “During rehearsals Brad started occasionally referring to me as The Governess.”

The veteran quizzer reportedly said she favoured the new nickname because it was a little bit “kinkier.”

Anne added: “I said to producers, ‘Could I be that instead?’ and I think what I said to them was, ‘It’s more kinky’.

“What I meant was that the headmistress has always got a board of governors and Ofsted and she can’t do everything she wants; a governess is a free agent.”
