The Crown fans furious as Netflix teases controversial wedding in final season

Netflix has teased that the forthcoming final season of The Crown will feature a royal wedding storyline – and fans are not happy.

As the sixth series of the popular historical drama about the British Royal Family enters a new decade, it will not only cover “sensitively” the death of Princess Diana but also now-King Charles III’s wedding to now-Queen Camilla.

Shared on Twitter, now known as X, Netflix wrote alongside a picture of a wedding program: “After six seasons, seven years and three casts, @TheCrownNetflix comes to an end later this year.

“We’ll be back with more soon, but here’s a hint at what’s to come in our final season.”

The program read: “Service of prayer and dedication following the marriage of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall.

“Sunday 9 April 2005 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.”

A number of viewers seemed disappointed with the apparent focus of the nuptials of Charles and Camilla, and the direction the post hinted the series may be going in.

They vented their anger in the comments of the Twitter post, with many writing in the comments “Team Diana”.

@Emmaburnx said: “Could have ended it at Kate and Will’s wedding… would have been so cool.”

@RJuls1205 added: “Honestly, we were all hoping for Young Royals updates.”

@Moianne42 commented: “Thanks, I’ll remember not to watch that episode.”

The official update comes several months after photos from the set of the upcoming series were seen, showing the filming of Charles and Camilla’s 2005 wedding ceremony.

Actor Dominic West, playing Charles, was snapped at York Minster as scenes were shot representing the royal’s second marriage, with the location being used instead of St George’s Chapel in Windsor where the King and Camilla tied the knot.

Photos from the filming also showed actors portraying Prince William and Prince Harry, as well Camilla’s children Laura Lopes and Tom Parker Bowles on set.

It is understood that Camilla and Charles’ nuptials will be portrayed in a positive way, and will leave the public feeling “warm and happy” rather than outraged over how Princess Diana’s death, aged 36, was depicted.

A source told the MailOnline: “For some months it has felt like the show has been goading the public by ghoulishly telling the story of Diana’s death in a heartless way, therefore causing upset to Princes William and Harry needlessly.

So the decision to end it so nicely, Netflix hopes, will change the perception that they want to be callous, they hope it will remove the bad taste from viewers’ mouths.”
