ABC’s hit medical drama The Good Doctor returned to screens earlier this month and although Dr Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore) was promoted to an attending physician, a departure could be on the cards after an explosive row with Dr Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff).

The season premiered with a host of new responsibilities for Shaun, after getting married he was now a husband to his longtime girlfriend Lea Dilalllo (Paige Spara).

His career was also on an upward trajectory as he was no longer a surgical resident, instead, he had secured his place as an attending physician.

With his new role, Shaun was introduced to his first-year intern Dr Danica ‘Danni’ Powell (Savannah Welch) who he had taken under his wing.

Despite this, it looks as though he could soon be cracking under the pressure after making a number of mistakes.

The trailer for the upcoming episode titled Shrapnel, showed Shaun making a seemingly disastrous mistake which he refused to take accountability for.

During the clip, he, Danni and a second surgical intern Dr Daniel ‘Danny’ Perez (Brandon Larracuente) were introduced to a patient who had been injured by shrapnel.

As the patient winced in pain, Danni reassured him: “We’ve treated hundreds of shrapnel wounds you’re going to be fine.”
To which, Shaun agreed: “Dr Powell is right, you’re going to be fine.”

However, this wasn’t the case when they went to surgery and a surgeon noticed: “That looks like is from a charge, not a shell.”

After she urged: “Shut off the electrocautery,” there was a huge spark from the patient’s open body.

This led Dr Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) to scream: “What the hell was that!”

As a result, Shaun was confronted by a disappointed Glassman, who stated: “I’m angry with you.”

After Shaun probed for a reason, he added: “Because of Lim’s surgery”, but after he defended his actions, saying“I made the right choice”, the conversation turned into a row.

A furious Glassman shouted: “You’ve got to take some kind of accountability.”

This seemingly triggered Shaun, who demanded: “You’re wrong, leave now.”

Although the pair have clashed before, this time could lead to a potential dismissal as Glassman serves as the hospital’s president.

It’s yet to be seen how Shaun will rectify his choices, as Lim’s reputation could now be in jeopardy as she went ahead with the surgery, trusting Shaun had done the correct checks.

Depending on how the patient is affected by the spark, Shaun may be punished with anything between a warning and a suspension.

Although the conversation turned into an explosive row, Glassman may also defend Shaun against his superiors because he acts as Shaun’s mentor and father figure.

Despite this, Shaun had previously rejected this notion and asked Glassman to back off so he could make his own mistakes.

The Good Doctor season six continues Mondays on ABC in the US. A UK release date has yet to be announced.
