The Handmaid’s Tale is filled with women who have been done wrong by Gilead, a backward system where females are Government property. Some have been treated worse than others as handmaids, those of which include Janine Lindo (played by Madeline Brewer) who had an eye removed in the first series and her daughter taken away in 2017. Season four saw Janine try to escape with June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) but was once again captured and put under the watchful eye of Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd).

What else has The Handmaid’s Tale Janine actress Madeline Brewer been in?

The Handmaid’s Tale’s Janine Lindo is portrayed by 30-year-old actress Madeline Brewer.

While she is best known for the dystopian drama, Madeline’s first big role on the small screen was in Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black.

She was Tricia Miller in the first 10 episodes of season one of the unforgettable women’s prison drama.

Sadly, she had a tragic ending as Tricia died of a drug overdose and didn’t return for the other six series.

The following year, Brewer went on to star in the Netflix thriller Hemlock Grove as Miranda Cates.

Hemlock Grove is based on the book of the same name by Brian McGreevy which revolved around the peculiar residents and killer creatures of the former steel town in Pennsylvania.

For the next few years, Brewer went on to appear in shows like The Deleted, Black Mirror’s Raiman, Grimm and Captive State.

In 2019, she also starred in John Cameron Mitchell’s musical podcast Anthem: Homunculus.

Earlier this year, Brewer starred in the sci-fi remake of Space Oddity as a character called Liz.

Her IMDb page states she is currently working on a short as well called Pruning but few details have come out so far.

While she does continue to work on other projects, Brewer remains part of the main cast in The Handmaid’s Tale.

The actress previously opened up about how Janine has changed as the drama goes on.

Talking to Film, Brewer explained: “I don’t think that Janine is a revenge seeker. She’s unlike June in that way.

“I think that this season, she’s metabolised all of the things that have happened to her.

“And I think that she’s just trying to get what happiness she can out of this life, what purpose she can out of this life.

“I think, when we see her toward the end of the season, just enough has happened to her that something has turned, not in the direction of vengeance but in the direction of numbness, which is new for Janine. She’s not a numb person.”

Season five, episode four, entitled Dear Offred, of The Handmaid’s Tale will air on Hulu on Wednesday, September 28.

The description reads: “June fights her need for violent revenge as Serena settles into her new role in Toronto.

“Rattled by Janine, Aunt Lydia makes a surprising suggestion to Lawrence.”

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 continues every Wednesday on Hulu in the USA. A UK release date hasn’t been announced.
