Fans witnessed a darker side of Sigtryggr (played by Eysteinn Sigurðarson) in the fifth and final season of The Last Kingdom, which came to Netflix earlier this year. As subscribers eagerly anticipate the upcoming release of Uhtred of Bebbanburg’s (Alexander Dreymon) final appearance in Seven Kings Must Die, Eysteinn has recalled his favourite moments portraying the iconic Vikings warlord.

Eysteinn has paid tribute to Emily Cox, who has portrayed noblewoman Brida for all five seasons of The Last Kingdom.

Originally a close friend and lover of Uhtred, Brida eventually becomes his sworn nemesis following the death of her partner Ragnar (Tobias Santelmann).

Having joined the series in season four, Eysteinn revealed he had been gripped by Brida’s story well before his casting as Sigtryggr.

“Before I came onto this show, my favourite character was Brida,” he confirmed.

“She’s just amazing. Emily Cox is such a strong actor, and just watching the show, I would always be drawn to that character.”

Brida has remained a firm fan-favourite since the series originally began on its original home with BBC Two.

Now an international sensation following its move to Netflix, The Last Kingdom is sadly unlikely to bring back Brida for the upcoming film finale following her death in season five.

“She’s fierce, she wears her heart on her sleeve, and I really admire that,” Eysteinn told Netflix. “And she’s just exhilarating to watch.”

Brida remained fiercely determined and capable to her final moments as she led a hunt for Uhtred throughout the final season.

Sadly, the battle with her former ally came to an abrupt end when Uhtred’s daughter Stiorra (Ruby Hartley) struck her with an arrow.

Her demise was all the more tragic as Uhtred refused to kill her, and she died in his arms realising she had nothing left to live for.

Despite the tragic end to her character, Emily was thrilled to once again throw herself headfirst into The Last Kingdom’s signature gruelling action sequences one last time.

“To be honest, I really love it. I’m an only child, so I’ve had the luck that I’ve never ever been hit by anybody and I’ve never had a fight!” she explained.

“So I found it really cool to have the sword in my hand and letting some aggression out, it’s actually really fun.

“I did one year of Krav Maga before that, but I’ve never actually properly fought anybody. So I love it.

“I used to dance a lot, and so I love moving, but it’s a very different way of moving.”

“Alex always makes fun of me because he always finds it looks a bit like a ballet dancer trying to fight! I don’t, I think it looks cool.”

Her previous martial arts and dancing experience set Emily in good stead for the series, as Brida endures some of her most intensive physical moments in the last season.

While she won’t be reuniting with Uhtred during his final quest, there may be a small chance of some flashback scenes with Brida and some more old favourites in the upcoming feature film.

The Last Kingdom seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Netflix. Seven Kings Must Die will be released in 2023.
