Scottish star Lauren Lyle joined Outlander back in 2017 as the eldest daughter of Laoghaire MacKenzie (played by Nell Hudson). Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) became her step-father after he decided to marry Laoghaire and the Highlander had a close bond with his step-daughter. Marsali has become a key member of the Fraser clan after Jamie and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) relocated to America to start a new life together.
Season six saw Marsali really coming to the fore as she dealt with another birth as well as her husband Fergus Fraser’s (César Domboy) alcoholism, which threatened to tear the couple apart.
Marsali has also grown as a character as she supported Claire, even taking the life of Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) after he attacked Claire.
After an initially frosty and awkward relationship with Claire, Marsali bonded with the 20th century time traveller and considered her a mother figure.
Lyle will be reprising her role in season seven with filming taking place in Scotland. There are hopes the show could be hitting screens at some point next year.
How tall is Lauren Lyle?
Lauren is 5ft 8in or 1.72m, according to My Celebrity Bio. She has previously spoken about how she went through a “big audition process” to win the role of Marsali on Outlander.
Lyle said she thought she’d “mucked up” her audition by saying the wrong lines, however, she was offered the part the next day.
She said: “It was unreal. I remember the shock and exactly where I was in London at the time walking to one of my many day jobs.
“It’s been an incredible journey getting to become a part of such a loved and successful show. Stepping onto those sets each day really is a special experience.”
Lyle started out in theatre before making the move into film and television but admitted the stage was “in my bones”.
She was part of the National Youth Theatre REP company when the offers for TV started rolling in and she landed both Jimmy McGovern’s acclaimed drama Broken and Outlander within the space of three weeks.
Reflecting on the similarities to her Outlander alter-ego, Lyle said: “Marsali has a brave and romantic energy I have loved exploring and like to think is a part of me too.
“She innately commands respect which is something I strive to and she really goes after what she wants,” Lyle added to Wonderland Magazine in 2021.
Outlander has opened many doors for Lyle, who will be next starring as the title character in the detective drama Karen Pirie.
The ITV drama is slated to be coming to screens soon with Lyle sharing a sneak peek at the show on her Instagram account.
She posted to her 217,000 followers: “FIRST LOOK TEASER – Here she is. My new show #KARENPIRIE coming September @itv. Feels very very mad. Very excited vvv surreal!”
Karen Pirie is based on the character of the same name by acclaimed Scottish crime writer Val McDermid, who is also the genius behind Wire in the Blood and Traces.
She will also be featuring in the horror film Mercy Falls, which is in post-production. The film set in a remote location in the Scottish Highlands with a group of youngsters falling into harm’s way after their quest for a long-lost cabin goes awry.
Mercy Falls will also star fellow Outlander actor Gilly Gilchrist, Nicolette McKeown, Layla Kirk, James Watterson, Joe Rising and Eoin Sweeney, according to Screen Daily.
Along with these projects, Lyle also previously landed roles in the BBC submarine thriller Vigil as well as starring in Broken and movies Girls Who Drink and Tell It to the Bees.
She previously admitted if she wasn’t an actress, she’s “loved to be in radio”, saying in an Outlander behind-the-scenes video: “I think I’d would be really good as a radio DJ.”
