The Masked Dancer viewers will see a famous face quit the series early in upcoming scenes after suffering a horror fall backstage.

The celebrity contestant was forced to pull out of the wacky ITV dance competition after taking a tumble and injuring their ankle in rehearsals.

This means that three stars will be unmasked during Saturday's (October 1) episode instead of the planned two.

A show insider told The Sun: "It’s really bad luck. ITV obviously aren’t revealing who the injured character is, they’ll wait for Saturday’s show.

"It’s ironic they got injured while they were not even wearing their crazy costume because the celebrities are barely out of them backstage."

Host Joel Dommett teased a shock triple elimination during last week's instalment but failed to mention it was due to one star bowing out early.

Gareth Malone was unmasked as Cactus during the previous episode and became the fourth person to be sent home from the series.

After his unveiling, the choirmaster revealed he went to great lengths to keep his involvement in the show a secret from his family and friends.

He went as to tell his parents he was working with Tom Cruise as a justification for why he would be late to their 50th wedding anniversary celebrations.

He also shared his suspicions of which celebrities may be behind the characters remaining on the show.

Fans have already seen Strictly winner Stacey Dooley be unveiled as Prawn Cocktail, actress Joanna Page revealed and Desperate Housewives hunk Jesse Metcalfe unmasked as Astronaut.

Still to be unmasked are Onomatopoeia, Tomato Sauce, Sea Slug, Scissors, Pillar and Post, Candlestick, Pearly King, and Odd Socks.

Viewers have taken to social media to theorise the identity of Pearly King as celebrity chef Gino D'Acampo – although Eastenders Mick Carter actor Danny Dyer seems the most popular guess for the identity of this costume.

The Masked Dancer airs Saturday nights on ITV
