The One Show and The Repair Shop team up
The Repair Shop’s Lucis Scalisi faced a nightmare when working on an unusual three-dimensional portrait.
On Thursday’s repeated episode of the BBC show, viewers saw a religious artefact brought in which depicted the three aspects of Hindu gods – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
Lucia was brought the item by one man who revealed his grandad had made the lenticular.
Explaining what that meant to host Jay Blades, the art restorer revealed it’s an optical illusion which creates different images when moved in certain directions.
Giving more information about the painting, the guest told Jay and Lucia his grandad made it in the 1920s when living in India.

However, over the years the glass had become discoloured with insects managing to get inside of the frame.
Giving the image a closer inspection, she commented: “There’s some delamination on these strips and it’s separating a bit.
“I will put some starch paste in these and clamp them together and that will fix those.”
Lucia explained that as the strips have moved over the decades, they’ve pulled the colour off of the back print which she’d have to touch up.

However, it looked as though the process wasn’t as straightforward as Lucia had planned as she ran into some issues.
Taking the object apart, Lucia had to restore the slats back into position as she had to work extremely fast.
Putting PVA glue on the background image, the art restorer then had to ensure the top part slotted back into place.
She said: “Now I have to start positioning them, it’s very tricky. The slats are really quite bendy and they don’t want to stay.
“It’s tricky work, oh what a nightmare. It’s worked on some of them, I’m just going to have to go over them again as best as I can.”
However, after some time Lucia managed to get the slats back into the correct position as she revealed the transformation to the guest.
Seeing his item after Lucia’s work, the man was moved to tears as he said: “It’s just so much more vibrant, it’s almost a different picture, it’s beautiful.”
The Repair Shop is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
