The Royle Family returning for one-off special to mark 25th anniversary

Caroline Aherne talks tea in The Royle Family

The Royle Family is returning to screens for a one-off special to mark the show’s 25th anniversary.

The show became one of the defining sitcoms of the 1990s and it followed a Manchester-based family who were always sitting on their sofa watching television.

It was created by Caroline Aherne who died in 2016 aged 52 and Craig Cash, 62.

She played Denise in The Royle Family while Craig portrayed Dave.

To celebrate a quarter of a century since the comedy first aired on the BBC, Gold will be broadcasting an updated version of The Royle Family: Down The Back Of The Sofa.

The documentary will air in September and feature cast members like Ricky Tomlinson, Ralf Little and Sue Johnston.

Ricky became a household name for his portrayal of Jim Royle – a slob who spends his days moaning about life in his armchair.

“A quarter of a century! The Royle Family has without doubt left a permanent mark in television history and we’re delighted to have commissioned this documentary for the 25th anniversary,” Gold commissioning editor Jason Dawson said.

The hit series ran for three seasons from 1998 to 2000 and fans were thrilled when it later returned for a mix of specials between 2006 and 2012.

Jason added: “Working alongside Craig and the brilliant team at Phil McIntyre is such a pleasure, and we hope viewers will enjoy reliving this celebration of one of the nation’s most beloved shows.”

Leading actor Ricky recently returned to screens to star in Celebrity Gogglebox alongside former co-star Sue.

The Royle Family’s fans could not get enough of the pair, with Catherine tweeting earlier this summer: “Love Ricky on this, he’s basically Jim Royle in real life #Gogglebox.”
