Despite the first season of The Sandman becoming one of Netflix’s most popular new fantasy series in recent years, millions of fans were kept waiting for several months to find out if the adventures of Dream (played by Tom Sturridge) would continue. Now, creator Neil Gaiman has just broken the exciting news that a second season of the drama is indeed in the works.
Neil reposted a short trailer for the second season of The Sandman with an exciting update for his followers.
Many viewers were left disheartened when the series wasn’t immediately picked up for a follow-up despite rave reviews and topping Netflix’s charts.
Thankfully, the hit comic book adaptation has remained popular over the months since its initial release in August.
A special bonus episode released two weeks later may have helped spark more interest in the series, and a second season of The Sandman was finally announced on Wednesday night.
On his Twitter page, Neil confirmed to his three million followers: “The rumours are true.
“Netflix is thrilled that so many of you have been watching Sandman, and the thing we were all hoping would happen… has indeed happened…”
Along with his tweet, the author unveiled a short stinger for the series, featuring Dream’s iconic helm emerging from the sand.
A caption reading “The dream continues” accompanied the cryptic trailer.
In a tease on Netflix’s Twitter page, he added: “There are some astonishing stories waiting for Morpheus & the rest of them…
“Now it’s time to get back to work. There’s a family meal ahead… And Lucifer is waiting for Morpheus to return to Hell.” (sic)
Further details about the second season are being kept under wraps, but it is speculated to adapt issues nine-16 of the original comic book run, also known as The Doll House.
Later, Neil was just as excited to reveal The Sandman icons have now been available for Netflix users, featuring characters like Dream, Johanna Constantine (Jenna Coleman) and Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie).

Upon hearing the news, hundreds of fans wasted no time in congratulating Neil for his hard work in getting a second season confirmed.
Supporting star for the series Sanjeev Bhaskar tweeted: “This is fantastic news.
“The return of @Netflix_Sandman I’ve had quite a day. Quite a week. I still even have cake left!”
And Neil retweeted from Daniel J Willis: “I for one am shocked that Netflix renewed the wildly popular show that was most watched in every country for like two months and will probably win most of the Emmys.
“No, really, I’m shocked. Netflix cancels everything, they’re terrible at this.”
And Sandman fan @Blainelikestuff exclaimed: “THIS IS AMAZING!! @neilhimself thank you so much for putting your heart and soul into willing the show to continue.
“It has been a long LONG time since I’ve been this excited to see a character on screen. Like, 11th Doctor long. But WE GET TO SEE DELIRIUM!!! AND HER POWERS!! WOW.”
Netflix has yet to confirm a possible release date for season two, but production is most likely to begin next year in time for a 2024 premiere.
The Sandman season 1 is available to stream on Netflix.
