Top Boy’s Dushane star explains reason he wanted to end Netflix series

Top Boy: Season 3 official trailer on Netflix

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Top Boy.

Top Boy star and executive producer Ashley Walters has opened up on why he wanted the show to finish.

The Netflix drama has been part of viewers’ lives since 2011, with the first two series brought to life on Channel 4 before it was given a reboot in 2019 for three more outings.

Subscribers have been obsessed with Dushane (played by Ashley Walters) and Sully’s (Kane “Kano” Robinson) violent and emotional journey as they scrambled to get to the top of the drug game.

So when it came out that Top Boy would end after season three on Netflix which came out in full on Thursday, September 7, fans were gutted.

However, Walters has since revealed that there could have been more seasons but he and Kano turned down the opportunity.

Opening up to GQ, Walters explained: “[Netflix] wanted to go on forever!

“And Kane [Robinson] and I were like, ‘Personally, we can’t.’

“We don’t think it’s the right thing to do. It may have gone on too long anyway.

“Not that it’s not been great and the seasons have all been great and everyone’s loved them and I’ve loved them.

“But it wouldn’t have been right. I like to end on a high.”

Director William Stefan Smith, who was behind the show’s two final episodes, agreed with Walters.

He added how it was the production team’s goal to “bring the story to a close with the utmost care and heart”.

Smith said that he didn’t want to leave season three with any “loose ends”, wrapping up the story for good.

And given what took place in that series finale, it’s safe to say the creators did just that.

Dushane was running away with Sully’s drugs as he needed money to start a new life abroad after killing Jeffrey (Shaun Dingwall).

He was making his escape when Sully shot him as Dushane was climbing over a locked gate and the pair shared a sad moment as the latter died of his injury.

Sully then later suffered the same fate as he was shot dead in his car, with the identity of who murdered him remaining a mystery.

Top Boy is available to watch on Netflix.
