Kenny Doughty and Brenda Blethyn have worked together on the set of Vera for seven years as the gritty ITV programme’s leading characters. After finishing filming Kenny, who plays Vera Stanhope’s right-hand man Aiden Healy, took to social media to pay tribute to his “absolute rock of a friend” Brenda.

Kenny shared on Instagram: “And that’s a wrap. S12 E5. We now have seven episodes to show and I’m excited for you to see them.

“Of course, I want to say thank you and congratulations on another series to my buddy Brenda.

“[She’s an] absolute rock of a friend and astounding leading lady. Love you!

“But this show simply would not happen without the hardest working crew I know. On the floor every day. No matter the location. The weather. The tears. The laughter.

“They give Brenda and myself the stage in which to act. And without them, we would be rudderless.” (sic)

He ended the post, published on Friday, by naming more than a dozen people who have helped with the ITV series.

Kenny and Brenda posed with a clapperboard alongside Riley Jones as they smiled at the camera.

“Merry Christmas. Keep safe. Lots of love,” Kenny signed off.

Brenda, 76, updated her fans about filming in the North East of England ending on her social media too.

On Friday, she shared some exciting news on her official Twitter account, prompting speculation the hit series will return very soon.

“That’s a wrap on Vera 12,” she penned. “Many thanks to the wonderful Vera team cast and crew. Feel emotional.”

Both Brenda and Kenny occasionally share pictures together on the set of the ITV drama for their followers.
