On Thursday, September 8 the announcement that Queen Elizabeth II had died shocked the nation with many turning to broadcasters such as BBC and ITV for rolling updates. Since then there has been extensive coverage of the events which follow the death of the monarch, which also saw the unity between Prince William and Prince Harry after their relationship became strained.

Gogglebox stars Giles and Mary got emotional on Friday as they watched the Queen coverage, with Mary praising Prince William for his ‘leadership’ actions.

Following the days after Queen Elizabeth II’s death, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton, along with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were seen together for the first time to pay their respects.

The four reunited outside of Windsor Castle where many members of the public had laid flowers and notes as their sign of respect.

After viewing the flowers and taking in the impact that Her Majesty had on the public, the four turned to the many waiting outside of Windsor Castle.

Prince William and Kate made their way down the procession thanking many of the people there and receiving flowers on behalf of their late grandmother.

The coverage was shown during the recent episode of Channel 4’s Gogglebox where Giles and Mary praised the actions of Prince William.

Mary was seen visibly moved by the announcement of the Queen’s death, as she sobbed: “This is the problem, we don’t have a role model now.

“There is nobody of that stature in our public life that we can admire.”

Giles quipped: “King Charles, Mary,” however she clapped back: ” Yes. A female role model I was thinking of.

“We need a female role model, I mean who else is there? She is incomparable.”

As the coverage of their arrival to Windsor was shown and the announcement that Prince William had personally invited Harry and Meghan along, Mary exclaimed: “The Queen would be thrilled to see that, wouldn’t she.”

Trying to lighten the mood, Giles joked: “I tell you what would break the ice, a game of Twister at Frogmore cottage.”

However, Mary was unimpressed by his humour and snapped: “Oh Giles grow up, this isn’t a time for playing twister.

“Good for you Prince William, that shows leadership, King qualities.”

Despite many programmes being pulled from BBC, ITV and Channel 4 schedules, Gogglebox remained one of the few shows to stay on the air.

Viewers of the show praised Channel 4 for deciding to keep the show on as they felt a sense of comfort after the heavy news.

Twitter used @_MikeOglesby_ commented: “There’s just something really comforting about settling down to #Gogglebox every Friday night. Glad it’s back!”

Cathal Haughey added: “I’m so glad #Gogglebox is back to just have some escapism.”

Elliot Gomez said: “I’m so glad Chanel 4 decided to still show #Gogglebox tonight. A welcome break. A brief distraction.” (sic)

In a statement released by Channel 4, the channel outlined how it had made “significant changes” to its schedule, “including added extended news coverage, to ensure that Channel 4 is respectful following the news from Buckingham Palace about the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

“Channel 4 exists to offer viewers an alternative and that is particularly important at times like this. Gogglebox is a much loved national institution and it will air as planned tonight bringing a valuable sense of continuity for many of our viewers.”

Gogglebox airs Friday from 9pm on Channel 4.
