Winter on the Farm: Helen jokes about chopping wood
During Thursday night’s instalment of Winter On The Farm, host Helen Skelton shared some exciting baby news with Channel 5 viewers.
She was joined by The Yorkshire Vet star David Nicholson who works on Cannon Hall Farm, in Yorkshire. He has been helping rear a little Highland calf which was struggling to feed from its mother.
Footage was soon shown of the calf’s birth, but Dave was nowhere to be seen in the clip, despite his involvement with the animal. Sharing an update on the heartwarming programme, Helen shared: “Now eagle-eyed among us might have noticed that Dave was not on hand when the little calf came into the world, for good reason.
“It’s because Fern [the cow] is a proud mum, but you are a proud grandad – have a look at him.”
A series of photographs of Dave cradling his newborn grandson were shown to viewers, with Helen gushing over the adorable baby.

“Who is this little dude?” Helen asked Dave, who replied: “That’s baby Arthur, he’s doing really well.”
“He’s growing well and he is putting loads of weight on,” the chuffed farmer added.
Co-host Jules Hudson chimed in: “I’ll tell you what, your grandaughter has got some competition now.”
Helen revealed baby Arthur was born on the exact same night as the calf, which is why Dave was not present for the animal’s birth.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star added: “We don’t need to ask how proud you are because it is written all over your face, congratulations to you and all of the family.”
The episode focused on Highland Fern’s birth story as well as a rare grey stallion called Hercules who was already 16 hands.
An expert Shire Horse judge visited the farm to assess 18-month-old Hercules to determine if he could be a breeding stallion in the future.
One of the farmers Robert Nicholson said ahead of the show airing on Twitter: “This horse could be one in a million, Shires are rare and grey Shires are rarer. And this chap, I think, is going to do great things.”
His colleague Dave added: “There is a lot a stake here and we are keeping everything crossed.”
The expert explained what traits Hercules needed if he was to pass as a breeding stallion, and the inspection was going to take place later down the line.
Elsewhere on the episode, Helen and Jules introduced viewers to the farm’s alpacas and could not resist taking a few selfies with them.
Winter On The Farm episodes are available to watch on My5.
