A massive search operation is underway in western Austria to try and find people buried in an avalanche on a mountain.

At least 10 people were missing after the avalanche took place at around 3pm this afternoon. One person has since been rescued.

Search teams were scrambled to the scene with at least 100 people taking part in the rescue efforts, and several helicopers also being used to try and find the missing winter sports enthusiasts.

Now it is dark the rescuers will be using head torches so they can still see, so they can continue to search into the night.

In a statement the rescue team said: “We are doing everything we can to rescue winter sports enthusiasts.”
